Vaclav Cerny ‘to play last Old Firm derby’ as Rangers exit nears
Vaclav Cerny could potentially be playing his last Old Firm derby on Sunday, with the Rangers forward’s future up in the air.
The Gers signed the Czechia international on loan from Wolfsburg last summer until the end of the season, and he’s been one of their most influential players in recent months.
While Cerny’s stay at Ibrox could possibly be made permanent with a £5.5million buy option included in the original agreement with the German outfit, it remains to be seen whether the Light Blues will trigger it.
The Bears will host Celtic in the Scottish Premiership on 4 May, which may be the last time the 27-year-old winger will feature in the Old Firm derby.

Rangers uncertain of Cerny transfer ahead of clash v Celtic
Cerny’s future at Ibrox is up in the air as the Gers face the Hoops, Scott McDermott says.
The Record journalist isn’t sure whether the Light Blues will make a push to sign the Wolfsburg loanee permanently in the upcoming transfer window.
McDermott feels that with the potential takeover on the horizon at the Bears outfit, a number of players could feature in their last Old Firm derby soon.
| Competition (2024/25) | Appearances | Goal(s) | Assist(s) |
| Scottish Premiership | 28 | 11 | 2 |
| Europa League | 12 | 6 | 2 |
| Scottish Cup | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Premier Sports Cup | 4 | 0 | 2 |
| Champions League Qualifying | 2 | 0 | 1 |
Speaking on Hotline Live (1 May), the journalist said: “Cerny is due to go back to his parent club. That’s up in the air, whether they’ll be able to push the boat out and try to sign him.
“With a new regime expected to come in, there could be massive changes at Rangers in the summer. That’s why we’ve been saying for a few weeks now that these players are effectively fighting for their future. If they want to be a part of this new dawn, then they’re going to have to play better than they’ve been in the last few weeks.
“I think for a few good of these guys it could be the last Old Firm game.”
Barry Ferguson future key for Ibrox squad planning
Barry Ferguson is expected to leave Ibrox at the end of the season despite the Gers icon’s hopes of continuing for longer.
The ex-midfielder was appointed interim manager midway through the campaign and made a case to be appointed permanently after beating Jose Mourinho and Brendan Rodgers.
While some fans wanted the former Scotland international to remain in charge beyond this season, the Light Blues’ underwhelming results in the Scottish Premiership have dented those hopes.
Ferguson could affect Rangers’ transfer plans as Cerny is willing to sign for the Gers and play under the interim manager.
The Scotsman has a glowing reputation in Scotland and beyond due to his success at the Light Blues during his playing days.
Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have a significant decision to make soon, as time’s running out, and ideally, they should’ve already started preparations for next summer.
The next permanent manager will undoubtedly have a say in the incomings and outgoings at Ibrox in the upcoming transfer window, and the prospective new owners need to appoint someone sooner rather than later.
