Chris Sutton rages at ‘Mental’ Rangers development

Chris Sutton was far from pleased with what the Rangers players did in the draw against Aberdeen.

Gers went to Pittodrie on 13 April and secured a last-gasp point after playing out a 2-2 draw against the Dons.

Ianis Hagi scored a 96th-minute equaliser that prevented Barry Ferguson’s side from losing the contest.

Sutton rages at Rangers players celebrating the draw against Aberdeen

The Ibrox outfit secured a late equaliser in dramatic fashion, so they decided to celebrate the goal.

A few people from the Rangers bench turned to the Aberdeen fans after they scored – something that is normal in football.

However, Sutton seemed to have a problem with the incident and he brought it up in conversation with Kris Boyd.

Speaking on the Warm-Up, he said: “Drawing at Aberdeen and you know you are not going to get 42 goals back – what would you have thought? Would you have celebrated?”

“The Rangers bench were turning to the Aberdeen fans celebrating – ‘oh we have just lost the league, that is the league done’ – it’s just mental.”

Rangers must mount a title challenge next season

While the draw effectively handed Celtic the Scottish Premiership title, Gers’ players and staff were well within their rights to celebrate Hagi’s dramatic 96th-minute equaliser.

Late goals, especially in hostile environments like Pittodrie, are moments of passion in football, and the Rangers bench turning to the Aberdeen fans reflects the raw emotion of staving off defeat.

Sutton’s criticism, mocking their celebration as futile given the lost title, overlooks the spirit of competition – players should always fight until the end, regardless of the standings.

However, this moment also serves as a stark lesson for Gers.

The significant margin to Celtic underscores a season of inconsistency that cannot persist into the 2025/26 campaign.

With new owners set to take over, Rangers must channel this resilience into a genuine title challenge.

The incoming leadership, alongside sporting director Kevin Thelwell, needs to prioritise strategic signings and a managerial appointment that can close the gap, ensuring celebrations next season are for victories that truly matter in the race for the SPFL crown.
