Rangers urged to sign ‘sublime’ striker as 49ers takeover looms

Rangers are expecting to see plenty of change at Ibrox in the summer transfer window.

The 49ers Enterprises are looking to complete a takeover at Ibrox which should make the future look a lot brighter in Glasgow.

If the deal goes through, it seems unlikely that Barry Ferguson will stay in his post as manager past the end of his interim period and the new owners would look elsewhere.

This leaves plenty to the imagination of supporters at Ibrox, although with an increased level of investment expected, things should be looking up.

Jonny McFarlane tells Rangers who to sign

Regardless of who the manager is that will be taking Rangers forward next season, one thing is for sure: plenty of changes will be needed to compete at the top once more.

The hopes of new ownership will be to take the Gers back to the top of the Scottish Premiership into a position to compete with Celtic once more.

However, transfers are needed and one area where the Light Blues may be looking to strengthen is at the top of the pitch.

Cyriel Dessers has tallied up some impressive numbers for his side this term, but he is being linked with a move away from Glasgow at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Hamza Igamane has had an impressive debut campaign but has seen his minutes reduce under Ferguson, leading his form to stagnate.

The youngster is also being linked with a move away in the summer, with the likes of Newcastle United and Everton credited with interest.

Lawrence Shankland is one name that is being linked with a move to Rangers in the summer and, speaking on The Rangers Review podcast (29 April, 30:18), journalist Jonny McFarlane said he believes he’s better than previous targets.

When asked if he would prefer Shankland or previous Rangers target Kevin Nisbet, McFarlane replied: “I’d take Shankland all day, every day over Nisbet.

“I think Shankland is capable of the absolutely sublime, but he’s also a great penalty box player and I think he has shown over the last three seasons that he can do it consistently.”

49ers need to hit the ground running

If the 49ers complete their takeover at Ibrox, they will have to be ready to get to work right away in preparation for next season.

Given Shankland is reaching the end of his contract with Hearts in the summer, getting him on a free transfer could be a massive coup for the Gers as they look forward.

Shankland’s record at Hearts last season.

Although this season hasn’t seen him reach his best form, last season he was firing them in for fun, which has to give Rangers some interest.

With Dessers potentially set for a departure, he has to be replaced. Bringing in someone who has the experience at the top end of the pitch will surely pay off.
