Rangers news: US consortium jets in to seal Ibrox takeover as ‘tour’ emerges

Rangers are on the cusp of a takeover by a US consortium involving the 49ers, with key members of the deal already in Glasgow.

The Light Blues do not have anything else to play for this season, meaning all eyes are now on the imminent takeover led by Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe.

It emerged earlier in April that the US consortium has found a way to acquire a 51 per cent stake in Rangers without help from Sandy Easdale.

While the handover of power and an official announcement are still a few weeks away, it is only a matter of time before the Gers come under the said consortium’s control.

US consortium receives tour at Ibrox

Members of the US consortium set to acquire a majority stake in Rangers have now landed in Glasgow, according to Rangers Review.

The news outlet reported via their website on Tuesday (29 April) that the Gers’ prospective owners received a tour at Ibrox on Tuesday afternoon.

This comes just days after the Premiership heavyweights and 49ers Enterprises put out a joint statement about ‘productive talks’ over a takeover being held.

Cavenagh, the lead investor in the deal, has been spotted at Rangers’ games on multiple occasions, while 49ers technical director Gretar Steinsson has also been in attendance recently.

While the names of the people present at Ibrox on Tuesday are yet to be known, it is highly probable that Cavenagh and Steinsson were involved.

Marathe is also likely to have been present, as he flew in from San Francisco for Leeds United’s Championship clash with Bristol City at Elland Road on Monday, 28 April.

Rangers on cusp of takeover

It would also not be a surprise if people higher up the hierarchy at the 49ers, like Jed York, were also present for the tour at Ibrox.

Nevertheless, all signs point towards the fact that it is only a matter of time before Rangers have new owners in place.

The takeover deal is expected to be finalised before the end of May, which means the Light Blues are in for a huge summer transfer window under new owners.

One of the first decisions the US consortium will make as the new owners is regarding the team’s manager, with incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell set to hold talks with Barry Ferguson.
