Thelwell already concerned due to Rangers matters out of his hands

Rangers recently confirmed the appointment of Kevin Thelwell as their new sporting director, but he has a tough job on his hands when he eventually starts his new job.

Thelwell has joined from Everton and is set to lead a new era at Ibrox, with a new ownership and likely a manager set to come in this summer.

Rangers have endured one of their most miserable campaigns in recent years, coming nowhere near Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, while also falling short in the Scottish Cup and Europa League.

The new director comes with a lot of experience, but the job on his hands is so difficult that his chances of success have already been questioned.

Keith Jackson highlights Rangers problem for Thelwell

Rangers have a lot of work to do this summer, both in the transfer market and higher up at Ibrox, and Thelwell will be tasked with leading the rebuild.

However, even if Thelwell performs well in his role, Rangers have a mammoth task on their hands as they aim to usurp Celtic from the top.

Journalist Keith Jackson has now highlighted that Celtic’s dominance at the top of Scottish football is so strong that it will be incredibly difficult to topple them, regardless of who is overseeing matters.

“He’s the man who will have to come up with a plan to shatter a period of dominance which is so complete in its nature – so utterly suffocating – that it may soon feel almost overwhelming,” he wrote for the Daily Record (28 April).

“The odds are already so heavily stacked against Rangers that it’s almost impossible to imagine how they can stop four in a row becoming five in a row over the course of the next 12 months.”

Of incoming investor Andrew Cavenagh, meanwhile, Jackson wrote: “Somewhere in Philadelphia, Andrew Cavenagh may have been shuddering too.

“What exactly is he about to take on here now that the documents are nearing completion and his multi-million pound buy out is about to be concluded?”

Rangers have to stop Celtic dominance

Celtic have now won 13 of the last 14 top-flight titles in Scotland, and 21 of the last 26 major trophies on offer, a level of dominance which will not be easy to end.

Rangers simply do not have a choice though. Celtic’s latest title was their 55th, drawing level with Rangers, while their 120 major trophies is now ahead of the Gers’ 118.

The Gers cannot let this dominance continue as they will fall further and further behind their rivals, and if their turmoil at the top is not fixed, Celtic can expect more glory.

Rangers fans will now hope that the new ownership and refresh in the club hierarchy will allow them to rebuild and challenge properly again.
