Keith Jackson shares Marco Rose update as ‘left field’ Rangers candidate emerges
Marco Rose has emerged as an option to take charge as the first Rangers manager under Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe.
Barry Ferguson is just weeks away from leaving his role as the Gers’ caretaker manager, with the former captain now increasingly unlikely to be considered on a permanent basis.
While Ferguson deserves plaudits for taking Rangers to the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals, his record of four wins in 11 games across all competitions leaves a lot to be desired.
Incoming sporting director Kevin Thelwell is poised to hold talks with the 47-year-old in the coming days, all the writing already appears to be on the wall for him.

Keith Jackson reacts to Rose to Rangers news
With the US consortium involving 49ers Enterprises nearing a takeover, Rangers are primed to hire a big-name manager ahead of next season.
Steven Gerrard has been linked with a reunion with the Ibrox outfit, while Jose Mourinho is open to leaving Fenerbahce to take the reins in Auchenhowie.
Meanwhile, Rose is the latest name linked with the permanent manager job at Rangers, with the German tactician already named as the favourite in some lists.
Team | Appointed | In charge until | Matches |
RB Leipzig | September 2022 | March 2025 | 124 |
Borussia Dortmund | July 2021 | May 2022 | 46 |
Borussia Monchengladbach | July 2019 | June 2021 | 88 |
Red Bull Salzburg | July 2017 | June 2019 | 114 |
Keith Jackson is not surprised to see the former RB Leipzig manager emerge as an option for the Light Blues, considering his links to Red Bull, just like Thelwell.
The Daily Record journalist described Rose as the ‘left field’ candidate that he was anticipating, although he would be surprised if Rangers managed to hire him.
“You can understand why the link would be made with his previous experience at Salzburg and Leipzig, part of the sort of Red Bull family”, Jackson said on Hotline Live (27 April).
“Good manager, and you know, I could certainly understand why he’d be a person of interest.
“I’d be surprised if he wasn’t a person of interest. I’d also be quite surprised if Rangers manage to get him because I think a lot of clubs would be looking for a guy of his quality.
“Remember, a couple of weeks ago when we were talking about it, I said, eventually one will come out, somebody will tell somebody, and it might come from left field.
“That feels as if it could be, Marco Rose, but time will tell.”
Rose would be massive coup for 49ers
Rose has an impressive CV, having managed the likes of Dortmund and Leipzig. He has also won five trophies in his career, including two Austrian Bundesliga titles with Salzburg.
Although the 48-year-old has not managed outside Germany and Austria, he boasts a good reputation in European football.
That is why Rose would be a massive coup for the incoming Rangers owners if they manage to hire him as their new manager.
