James Tavernier exit: Chris Jack issues huge Rangers claim

Chris Jack has delivered a verdict on James Tavernier’s future at Rangers ahead of the summer transfer window.

The English right-back has been linked with an exit for the last two windows, but stayed put at Ibrox.

This season, he has been a first-team regular, operating at right-back as well as a centre-back in a back three.

Jack believes it’s the right time to sell Tavernier

Going into the summer transfer window, Tavernier still has another year left on his deal at Rangers.

This represents the last major window for Gers to get a transfer fee from the sale of their captain.

In January, he will be allowed to talk to other clubs and secure a pre contract, which would allow him to run down his deal at Ibrox.

Jack, a Rangers Review journalist, told their YouTube channel at 7:26: “For me, it feels like it’s the right moment for James Tavernier to move on. That’s a big call for any manager to make. Someone as established within the squad, your captain. It’s a big call to sell a Rangers captain but for me, he can’t be the second choice.”

Rangers must sell Tavernier and sign a quality right-back

To smoothen the deal to sell Tavernier this summer, Rangers must strategically address financial, tactical and fan-related factors.

They should set a realistic transfer fee, around £1-2million, given his age and contract expiring in 2026, to attract interest from clubs in Turkey or potentially the Middle East.

Negotiating promptly and flexibly can prevent valuation disputes.

Securing a replacement before finalising the sale will ease fan concerns and maintain squad depth.

Publicly, Rangers should emphasise Tavernier’s legendary contributions, while framing the move as a mutual benefit.

Selling the Englishman is crucial this summer to capitalise on his remaining value, free up his high wages for reinvestment and facilitate a squad refresh amid the 49ers takeover and new managerial appointment.

Delaying risks a free exit in 2026, undermining financial stability and Philippe Clement’s rebuild for a competitive 2025-26 season.
