Rangers news: Ridvan Yilmaz exit development emerges

David Edgar has issued a verdict on Ridvan Yilmaz’s permanent Rangers exit at the end of the season.

The Turkey defender has suffered fitness issues since last season and is currently out injured as well.

He’s also no longer the first-choice left-back, with Jefte ahead of him in the pecking order.

Yilmaz should be moved on in the summer – Edgar

Ahead of Saturday’s game against St Mirren, Barry Ferguson ruled the 23-year-old out of action, citing another injury.

Edgar claims that he will not be back before the end of the season, with only a handful of games to play before the end of May.

This term, Yilmaz has played just 17 league games and even when fit, his performances have not been up to the mark.

The left-back still has two more years left on his deal, as he’s contracted to stay at Rangers until 2027.

Edgar wrote on X: “Yilmaz out for rest of season. We really need to move him on this summer.”

Rangers need to cash in on Yilmaz this summer

Cashing in on Yilmaz this summer makes strategic sense for Gers as they aim to rebuild and compete with Celtic for the Scottish Premiership.

Yilmaz, signed for around £4million in 2022, has struggled to cement a consistent role due to injuries and competition from Borna Barisic and Jefte.

There could be interest from Turkey, given his age, offering Rangers a chance to secure a decent fee from his sale.

With the impending takeover by 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, the funds could be reinvested in a more reliable left-back or a high-impact signing, such as a prolific striker.

Yilmaz’s departure would also free up wages, crucial for squad restructuring under a new manager, potentially Steven Gerrard, who could prioritise players better suited to a high-pressing system.

At 23, Yilmaz may seek regular football elsewhere, aligning with Rangers’ need to move on players who haven’t fully adapted.

Selling him now maximises his value before his contract, expiring in 2027, diminishes leverage, ensuring Rangers bolster their squad effectively.
