Ferguson future at Rangers: Tom English reacts instantly after St Mirren draw

Barry Ferguson suffered another blow as Rangers drew against St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

Stephen Robinson’s team hosted the Gers in Paisley on 26 April, and the visitors dropped points once again.

The Light Blues took the lead twice through Cyriel Dessers and Nico Raskin, but were unable to hold onto their advantage on both occasions.

Kevin Thelwell may be tasked with speaking to Ferguson about his future at the end of the season, but things don’t look encouraging for the Scotsman.

Rangers to replace Ferguson as St Mirren secure point

Ferguson’s chance of extending his stay at Ibrox beyond this season has ended, Tom English says.

The BBC journalist believes the interim manager’s record at the Glaswegian outfit has been underwhelming since taking over from Philippe Clement.

English admits that the Bears’ struggles aren’t down to the former Scotland international, and doesn’t blame him for their recent performances.

Ferguson’s record as the Gers manager.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound (26 April, 17:21), the journalist said: “Oh yeah [Ferguson’s chance of getting the job is gone]. They’ve won three out of seven league games. If he said the words ‘not good enough’ once, he’s said them 50 times since he took over.

“This isn’t Ferguson’s fault. These problems at Rangers were deep-rooted before he even walked through the door. He and his coaches have done their damndest to try and change things. It’s just been beyond them, and I think it’s been beyond a lot of managers.

“I think they need to get to the end of the season pronto, get the new owners in and kind of start again. But this is not the coach’s fault. There are myriad problems with this team and this squad, and I can’t blame Ferguson for anything we’ve seen in the last few weeks.”

49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh have big decisions to make at Ibrox

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are closing in on their takeover of the Glaswegian outfit, and they’ll be tasked with making massive calls soon.

Ferguson’s future at Ibrox is uncertain, and incoming sporting director Thelwell will undoubtedly need to make a massive decision on who the next permanent head coach will be.

The interim manager showed promise after beating Jose Mourinho and Brendan Rodgers, but the Gers’ domestic form under him has been underwhelming.

Rangers should undergo a significant overhaul once the takeover is complete, bringing freshness back to the Glaswegian outfit.

The Light Blues have stagnated since Steven Gerrard won the league title, and the dip in standards has allowed Celtic to regain their dominance.

Nils Koppen pulled off decent transfer business with the signing of Vaclav Cerny on loan from Wolfsburg last summer, and the Bears need more such players to knock their Old Firm rivals off their perch.

Hamza Igamane has been another gem the Gers have unearthed, but the likes of Nedim Bajrami should serve as an example after his recent struggles.

It’ll be interesting to see what the US consortium can do once they arrive.
