Chris Sutton takes sly Rangers dig ahead of Dundee United v Celtic

Chris Sutton seemingly wouldn’t mind Celtic losing to Dundee United on Saturday, as they face Rangers next in the Scottish Premiership.

Tannadice Park is hosting Brendan Rodgers’ team on 26 April, while Barry Ferguson’s team travel to Paisley.

The Gers have nothing but pride left to play for this season after being knocked out of the Europa League by Athletic Club.

With another Old Firm derby coming up on 4 May at Ibrox, it could potentially be a monumental day for the Hoops if certain scenarios play out.

Celtic could win title v Rangers at Ibrox if they lose to Dundee United

Sutton took a sly dig at the Light Blues ahead of his former team’s visit to Tannadice.

The Englishman has no problem seeing Celtic losing against Jim Goodwin’s team, as it would give them a chance to lift the title at Ibrox.

Rodgers’ team are 15 points ahead of their Old Firm rivals as they face Dundee United, and they’ll be crowned Scottish Premiership champions if they don’t lose.

Speaking on Sky Sports Scotland on X (26 April), Sutton said: “In some ways it would be nice if they won it at Ibrox next week.”

Ferguson should focus on St Mirren

Ferguson’s hopes of taking charge at Ibrox permanently evidently look slim after the Gers were knocked out of the Europa League.

The former Scotland international brought much-needed belief among the supporters after the atmosphere around Ibrox had grown negative due to Philippe Clement.

While the Light Blues performed admirably in the European competition under the ex-midfielder, their form domestically has continued to be poor.

After a break from domestic football, Rangers are back in action against St Mirren away from home, and it’ll be interesting to see what team Ferguson lines up with.

There are several fitness issues the interim manager has to contend with, especially in the backline with the absence of Leon Balogun, Ridvan Yilmaz and Dujon Sterling.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the 47-year-old head coach give some of the youngsters a chance to gain first-team experience, but he’ll also have an eye on winning the remaining fixtures.

Ferguson will arguably be focused on ending his time in the Gers’ dugout the best way possible if this indeed is the final few games he’ll be taking charge of.

As for the Old Firm derby, the Ibrox faithful wouldn’t mind humbling Celtic.
