Rangers news: Four Lads stunned as news update emerges from Ibrox

Rangers recently announced that Everton director Kevin Thelwell will be joining come the end of the season.

Patrick Stewart’s long-drawn-out search for a sporting director came to an end when Gers made it official earlier this week.

Thelwell will be moving to Ibrox once his deal at Goodison Park runs out in the coming weeks.

Stevie Clifford lauds Rangers for hiring Thelwell

While being thrilled by the fact that things are finally falling into place, Stevie Clifford of Four Lads Had a Dream pointed out the flaws in the current structure.

There has been no cohesion behind the scenes, which has seen the hierarchy throw the manager under the bus whenever it’s convenient.

Recruitment has been appalling and fans have never been more isolated from the happenings as they currently are.

Clifford wrote: “The fact that Rangers have operated without a CEO, a director of football, a head of academy, and even a chairman during periods over the past two years is, quite frankly, ludicrous for a club of our size.

“Any business needs leadership, joined-up thinking and alignment. A club’s blueprint should remain consistent, even as personnel change.

“Departments need to work in harmony, operating in sync over several years, with common goals and a unified direction. Everything should be seamless.”

Thelwell has four key months ahead of him

Over the next four months, Thelwell will face a pivotal period of transition and strategic planning to reshape the Gers’ football operations.

Initially, he will conclude his tenure at Everton, ensuring a smooth handover as his contract expires, while beginning to engage with Rangers’ hierarchy remotely.

Thelwell will likely visit Ibrox and the Auchenhowie training ground to assess facilities, meet staff, and align with Stewart on the vision, especially amidst the ongoing takeover by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

His immediate focus will be restructuring the men’s first-team setup, including appointing a new permanent manager to replace Barry Ferguson, with names like Sean Dyche and Steven Gerrard in discussion.

Thelwell plans to raid Everton for academy director Gareth Prosser to bolster Rangers’ youth system, a key priority.

He will also oversee recruitment, targeting four or five starting-calibre players, such as Dundee’s Josh Mulligan, to close the gap with Celtic.

Balancing squad rebuilding, financial constraints, and fan expectations, Thelwell’s decisions will set the tone for Rangers’ title challenge next season.
