Lee Carsley ‘interesting’ Rangers option after Kevin Thelwell development

Rangers could potentially turn to Lee Carsley as Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises search for a new head coach at Ibrox.

The prospective new owners are close to completing their takeover of the Gers, and outgoing Everton chief Kevin Thelwell has already been chosen as the Glaswegian outfit’s next sporting director.

Barry Ferguson’s future is uncertain at Ibrox, with the former Scotland international taking charge temporarily until the end of the season after Philippe Clement’s sacking.

The prospective new owners and the new hierarchy in place will need to decide on a new manager soon, and Carsley’s name has been suggested as a candidate.

Rangers appealed by Carsley after Thelwell appointment

Carsley may be an appealing option for the Gers if they decide to go down the sporting director model, Fraser Clarke says.

The Record journalist believes the former interim England manager could potentially be an interesting option at Ibrox due to his work with youngsters.

Clarke understands the possible allure of having someone like the Irishman take charge of the Light Blues after Ferguson’s departure.

Speaking on Game On (25 April), the journalist said: “I think it’s an interesting one, especially given [Carsley’s] work with young players. If Rangers are going down the sporting director model, then I could see why he could be an appealing one.”

49ers need to make swift decision on Ferguson

Cavenagh and the 49ers can’t afford to waste more time at Ibrox, with the takeover already taking longer than the fans had expected.

Losing to Athletic Bilbao may have taken Ferguson out of the running to be the next permanent manager, but the prospective new owners must be clear with their decision.

With just five games left in the season, there are several key decisions to make at the Glaswegian outfit, and the confirmation of the new head coach will surely speed up some processes.

Rangers must strengthen their squad in the upcoming transfer window, and the potential new head coach will definitely have a say in who the Bears should sign.

It’s also important to resolve some of the expiring contracts at Ibrox, with Ianis Hagi one of the key players who could leave for free soon.

Valcav Cerny’s loan spell at the Gers has been successful, but whether they’ll trigger the buy option to make his move from Wolfsburg permanent remains to be seen.

As long as the takeover talks drag on, it arguably won’t be easy to determine what the future holds for the Light Blues.

Supporters will soon start asking questions if answers aren’t provided.
