49ers ‘ramp up Rangers manager talks’ as Leeds United forced to react

Rangers are on the search for a new manager, but they are no closer to knowing who will take the hot seat.

Barry Ferguson has had a mixed spell as interim boss, overseeing some impressive results in an otherwise dismal season, but the Gers may look for a more experienced head.

Rangers have endured one of their worst seasons in recent memory, as they were embarrassed domestically and fell short in Europe.

49ers Enterprises are closing in on a takeover of the club, and they are now playing a part in the search for a new head coach.

The 49ers also have a stake in English side Leeds United, who could also be on the lookout for a new manager this summer.

However, right now, attentions are focused on Rangers. Gretar Steinsson was previously technical director at Leeds, but his new role will now see him play a part at all of their clubs across the enterprises.

This means that Steinsson will now play a role in Rangers’ search for a new manager, and The Athletic (25 April) have reported that he is speaking to potential candidates across the continent.

With Daniel Farke potentially leaving Elland Road, Leeds have stressed that Steinsson’s current business has nothing to do with the German’s situation, and is instead only to do with Rangers.

“49ers Enterprises are aiming to purchase a stake in Rangers and Leeds insisted that Steinsson’s conversations were in relation to hiring a new manager at Rangers,” the report stated.

Steinsson has been interviewing Rangers managerial candidates.

Rangers need to win silverware next season

This season has been a disaster for Rangers, and they will end the campaign trophyless for the second time in three seasons.

The Gers have not won the Scottish Premiership since Steven Gerrard’s side won their 55th title in 2021, and have won just one Scottish League Cup since.

Celtic’s dominance in Scotland may continue to grow if Rangers cannot build up any stability at the club, having gone through several managers since Gerrard left.

Silverware next season is a must, and Rangers must ensure they hire the right manager and recruit the right players to make themselves a competitive side once again.
