Ferguson ‘talks on cards’ after new sporting director development at Rangers

Rangers will soon decide on their next manager, with the appointment of a new sporting director likely to impact Barry Ferguson’s future.

The Gers icon was appointed interim manager after Philippe Clement’s departure, and it remains to be seen whether the former Scotland international will be appointed permanently.

Ferguson may hope to continue his stay at Ibrox, but Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises may likely have the final say after completing their takeover.

The Light Blues are close to appointing soon-to-be departing Everton chief Kevin Thelwell in a leadership role, and the shakeup in the hierarchy may have implications for Ferguson.

Rangers new sporting director to decide on Ferguson future

Ferguson’s future will be the first thing the Gers’ new sporting director may assess, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist revealed the Light Blues are close to appointing a new sporting director and know who they want.

Jackson feels that with the change in hierarchy, the interim manager’s prospects at the Glasegian outfit will be one to watch.

Speaking on Hotline Live, as relayed by Record (22 April), the journalist said: “I’m told Rangers are very close to appointing a sporting director. Really close. They know who it is they want.

“That’s going to be fascinating, to see who it is and his beliefs, views and philosophies. Also, what he thinks about the guy that’s currently sitting in the dugout. Because if he fancies Ferguson, then who knows? There’s a whole load of imponderables, but that will be the first thing that happens.

Thelwell appointment encouraging at Ibrox

Thelwell’s seemingly imminent arrival at Ibrox should be encouraging for fans as he brings a lot of experience with him.

The Blues’ director of football has had to work under severe financial difficulties at the Merseyside outfit under Farhad Moshiri, signing some impressive players, including Iliman Ndiaye, Jake O’Brien and Idrissa Gueye.

With the arrival of The Friedkin Group (TFG) at the Blues, they’ve decided to part ways with Thelwell, presenting the prospective new owners at the Gers an opportunity to get him.

Cavenagh and the 49ers have reached a breakthrough to buy 51 per cent controlling shares at Rangers.

The Ibrox faithful are eagerly waiting for the US consortium to arrive at the Light Blues after years of uncertainty in the hierarchy.

Ferguson doesn’t have the best of records since taking charge of the Glaswegian outfit, with the performances domestically, especially at home, underwhelming.

The Europa League might’ve been a way for the ex-midfielder to secure his tenure at the Bears beyond the current campaign, but Athletic Club proved too much for him.

Who the next Gers boss will be remains to be seen.
