Rangers to ‘bring Jose Mourinho in’ as Alan Hutton drops ‘special’ verdict

Alan Hutton cannot contain his excitement as Jose Mourinho emerges as a serious candidate to become the next Rangers manager.

With Rangers now out of the UEFA Europa League, Barry Ferguson is poised to leave the club at the end of the season, paving the way for a new managerial appointment.

Although a decision is not expected until Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe’s takeover goes through, a few candidates have already emerged for the job.

Steven Gerrard has been rated as the favourite to take the reins at Ibrox after being sacked as the Al-Ettifaq manager in January.

However, Mourinho is also an option for the Light Blues, with the Portuguese icon open to taking charge of the Glasgow giants.

Hutton reacts to Mourinho development at Rangers

Mourinho is said to be open to swapping Fenerbahce for Rangers, despite being contracted to the Turkish club until 2026.

Reacting to the news, Hutton claimed that it would be ‘special’ to see the three-time Premier League winner in the Premiership.

He admitted that Gerrard has some advantages over the 62-year-old due to his experience in Scotland, but insisted that Rangers hiring Mourinho would be ‘something else’.

“Bring him [Mourinho] in for the banter, that would be something else, wouldn’t it?”, Hutton said on the Scottish Football Social Club (21 April).

“It’d be special to see him in Scottish football. You know, there are pros and cons to both.

“Gerrard knows what it’s all about, won the league and everything, and he knows what it takes, but Mourinho, that’d be something else, wouldn’t it?”

49ers to decide on new manager soon

Rangers have nothing to play for, having crashed out of the Europa League and fallen 15 points behind Celtic in the Premiership title race.

Ferguson and Co. now face five pointless games in the league, meaning all eyes are now on the takeover and the new managerial appointment.

As exciting as Mourinho is, the Gers would have to pay Fenerbahce a compensation fee to acquire his services because he is contracted to them until next year.

Whereas Gerrard is available for free, having left Al-Ettifaq in January, and that is perhaps why he is leading Mourinho in the race to become the next Rangers manager.

It remains to be seen who the US consortium involving 49ers Enterprises will eventually zero in on.
