Ianis Hagi sends new Rangers message after recent developments

Rangers fell to a defeat against Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League quarter-finals which ended any chance of success this season.

Rangers have endured a miserable domestic campaign as they faltered in the Scottish Premiership and Cup, but Europe provided the opportunity for some salvation.

However, Rangers fell to a 2-0 defeat away at Athletic Club as they were outclassed by the Basque side, and their attacking limitations showed.

Ianis Hagi was withdrawn at half time in the defeat, with his future uncertain, and he has now sent a message to Rangers fans following the loss.

Hagi sends Rangers message after Athletic Bilbao defeat

Hagi faces an uncertain future with his contract expiring at the end of the season, and he was criticised in the defeat to Athletic Club.

The Romanian did score a late equaliser against Aberdeen in the previous match, and is well-liked among supporters.

Hagi for Rangers this season

The 26-year-old has now sent a message on his Instagram story on Saturday, highlighting his sorrow at the way the season has panned out for Rangers.

“Not our night, but your backing never goes unnoticed,” he posted, directed at Rangers supporters.

Hagi could leave Rangers

As it stands, Hagi is set to leave Rangers on a free transfer, and it is unclear whether the Ibrox club will want to keep him.

The Rangers’ ownership could change this summer, while it is also unclear who will be the next permanent manager.

Until these situations are clarified, it will be tough to gain any sort of clarity on the future of out-of-contract players. Hagi may sign a new deal now, but finds he is out of favour under a new coach if Barry Ferguson is replaced.

Hagi has been a useful servant for Rangers over the years despite some injury struggles, and there are positives if he is to remain as an experienced squad member heading into a transitional season.

The midfielder has made 129 appearances for Rangers, scoring 20 goals and providing 28 assists, and it would be tough to replace him if he does depart for free.
