Gerrard ready to return to the UK after Saudi stint

It’s understood that the former Liverpool captain is on the list of managers Gers are considering this summer.

He undoubtedly has previous experience of managing them, as he guided them to their famous 55th league title as they went unbeaten in the league.

However, he also on Southampton’s final shortlist as they’re looking to hire a new manager themselves in the coming weeks.

Frank Lampard, another manager in the mix for the Ibrox job, is the other name the recently-relegated Premier League side are considering.

Discussing this, journalist Graeme Bailey told EFL Analysis: “Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are both on Southampton’s final shortlist to be their new manager. The two England legends have been on Southampton’s radar for the last few weeks and both are in their sights.

“Lampard only took over at Coventry earlier this season, but has impressed in his short time with the club and it is believed Southampton would be an option he would consider.

“Gerrard, who is on Rangers’ list to return to Ibrox, is out of work following his stint in Saudi Arabia and is ready to return to the UK – we understand.”

Rangers must hire Gerrard post the San Francisco 49ers takeover

Hiring Gerrard as manager after the San Francisco 49ers finalise their takeover makes sense for the Ibrox outfit.

The Englishman previously led Rangers to the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title, ending Celtic’s dominance and proving his ability to deliver under pressure.

His familiarity with the club, their culture and the intense Old Firm rivalry ensures a seamless transition.

The 49ers, known for strategic investments as seen with Leeds United, are poised to inject significant funds, potentially £20-25million, into Gers, aligning with Gerrard’s need for robust transfer market backing, which he lacked during his first stint.

His aura and reputation could attract high-calibre players, enhancing the squad’s competitiveness in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League.

Despite mixed results at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard’s Ibrox success and current availability make him a low-risk, high-reward choice.

The 49ers’ long-term vision to challenge Celtic’s dominance matches Gerrard’s ambition to reestablish Rangers as Scotland’s top club, making his appointment a strategic fit.
