Rangers worry emerges as ’49ers to inherit Oscar Cortes debt’ at Ibrox
Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises may face several issues at Rangers, with Oscar Cortes potentially being one of them.
The Colombian national signed for the Glaswegian outfit on a loan deal from Lens in 2024, with an obligation to buy, but his impact this season has been negligible.
The US consortium could potentially complete their deal to buy the Gers soon, with Cavenagh in the stands against Athletic Club at home on Thursday (10 April).
Once the Americans set foot at the Light Blues, they’ll arguably have to make plenty of changes, but the situation with the likes of Cortes at Ibrox won’t help them.

49ers to inherit £4m Cortes debt at Rangers after takeover
Cavenagh and the 49ers will inherit Cortes’ debt at the Gers once they complete their takeover, Stephen McGinn says.
Paul Cooney shared the worry that the Light Blues may have as they have to pay £4million for the 21-year-old winger next summer.
| Competition (2024/25) | Appearaces | Goals | Assists |
| Scottish Premiership | 8 | 0 | 0 |
| Europa League | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Premier Sports Cup | 1 | 0 | 0 |
McGinn feels there’s no point debating the situation despite the Colombian national’s failure to live up to standards in the current campaign.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (15 April), Cooney said: “It’s a real worry, especially the £4m that’s going to have to be paid this summer for Cortes.”
McGinn responded: “It’s done now. There’s no point debating that. For the potential new investors, it’s almost a debt they need to inherit.”

Cortes deal an indication of past Ibrox failures
Barry Ferguson’s team held on to a 0-0 draw against Athletic Club despite Robin Propper being sent off early on, and the reverse fixture will arguably be enticing.
The interim manager has a massive decision to make with his attacking line at San Mames, with Mohamed Diomande also available once again.
The Ivorian midfielder was suspended for the reverse fixture against Athletic and was replaced in the starting lineup by Ianis Hagi, who had an encouraging outing.
Rangers will lose the Romania international for free if they don’t agree a new contract with him, and his situation raises concerns.
Cortes’ circumstances at Ibrox are also worrying, but for different reasons, with the forward arguably not worth the fee the Gers have to pay next summer.
It’s baffling that the Light Blues agreed to extend the Colombian ace’s loan last summer and included an obligation to buy in the deal after he picked up an injury towards the end of last season.
The 21-year-old’s fitness issues have haunted him once again in the current campaign, and he’s hardly played for the Glaswegian outfit this season
It will be interesting to see how the prospective new owners will handle Cortes’ situation at the Bears once they arrive.
