Chris Sutton reveals who will be next Rangers manager, ‘it won’t be Ferguson’

Chris Sutton believes that Barry Ferguson is not the right man for the Rangers job.

The Gers legend has taken the reins at Ibrox temporarily after Philippe Clement was sacked in February and has impressed at times.

He has the Light Blues on the verge of a Europa League semi-final if they can get past Athletic Bilbao in the second leg in Spain (17 April).

However, questions still remain over whether he will be handed the chance to manage his beloved side in the long term.

Sutton makes Ferguson admission at Rangers

Ferguson has endured a mixed spell at Ibrox in the dugout so far.

He has masterminded brilliant victories against the likes of Fenerbahce and Celtic but his side have also been defeated by Motherwell and Hibernian on home turf.

Sutton does not think that the Gers should hire the 47-year-old on a permanent basis and believes that the Govan club needs more than just passion.

Speaking on Sky Sports (13 April, 11:45 am), he said: “He can’t be Rangers manager, I think he is a bit of a chest beater as a manager, that is the way it seems to me.

“It’s always Rangers are really high after a victory then really low, the club needs stability, I don’t think that he has the necessary experience.

“In the short-term, if he wins the Europa League that would be enormous but I still don’t think they should give him the job full time, I think they should go with someone more experienced.

“Rangers need more than that as a manager.”

Ferguson could leave Rangers after interim spell

Ferguson inherited a struggling squad and a toxic atmosphere from the Belgian and he has done well to turn it around in his brief time in charge.

Surely if he wins a European trophy, the 49ers have to keep him in the dugout once their takeover is completed, to see how far he can take the Auchenhowie outfit.

He has shown a passion, a connection with the supporters and tactical knowledge that Clement lacked severely during his time in Govan and that should count for something.

It was always going to take time to turn around the dismal campaign and Ferguson deserves credit for the work that he has done so far, it is not fair to judge his managerial abilities off of the mess that he was handed.

He has demonstrated that he is not afraid to make the tough calls, such as dropping Jack Butland for the crucial clash with Bilbao on Thursday and deserves time to show what he can do in an environment that is not weighed down by the demons of the previous incumbent.
