James Tavernier transfer: Ally McCoist sets mission for new Rangers manager

James Tavernier faces an uncertain future at Rangers ahead of the summer transfer window.

The right-back has been a loyal servant for Rangers in the last 10 years, but only has one year remaining on his existing contract at Ibrox.

Tavernier’s inconsistent performances this season have raised doubts over his long-term future in Glasgow, especially with a takeover led by Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe set to be completed.

Rangers are also expected to name a new manager when Barry Ferguson’s tenure as their caretaker boss ends at the end of the season, meaning a lot will depend on who takes the reins at Ibrox.

Ally McCoist identifies Tavernier priority

Assessing Tavernier’s future, Ally McCoist admitted that he has been a “fabulous” servant to Rangers, although he has been critical of the full-back’s defending.

The talkSPORT pundit went on to hail the 33-year-old’s contributions in attack as “remarkable”, admitting that he would like to see him continue at Ibrox.

Thus, McCoist believes the first thing that the new Rangers must do in the summer is to sit down with Tavernier to understand his plans.

He suggested that the former Newcastle man may prioritise leaving the Premiership heavyweights in search of a new adventure elsewhere, but said that talks over a new contract must be held if he wishes.

“Listen, Tavernier has been brilliant for Rangers”, Tavernier told the Record’s website (10 April).

“One or two people – including myself – have had a wee pop at some of the defensive stuff. That’s by the by because he’s been a fabulous servant to Rangers.

“His figures in forward areas are nothing short of remarkable. Whoever the new manager is, the first thing they’ve got to do is sit down with him and see what he wants to do.

“Who have we got that can play right-back? You’ve got to weigh up all these options as well. But first of all, you need to find out what he wants to do.

“If he wants to sign another contract, then there’s a discussion to be had.

“But if he decides he’s had enough and wants to try something else towards the end of his career, then that will be his priority and will be up to him to do that. I’d keep him, absolutely.”

Tavernier to stay at Rangers

There is no denying that some of Tavernier’s performances this season have left much to be desired.

However, offloading the defender ahead of what is expected to be a landmark season for Rangers could come back to haunt the Glasgow giants.

The Light Blues are primed for a big summer of change, with the new ownership expected to come into power and put a new manager in place.

Tavernier’s departure would be yet another big change for Rangers and they might be better off delaying his exit by at least another year.

Considering the current crop of players at Ibrox, he is still the right man to lead the team into a new era.
