Rangers ‘set for serious business’ with new manager as Butland under scanner
Rangers could potentially have some massive decisions to make next summer once a new manager is appointed at Ibrox.
Barry Ferguson replaced Philippe Clement temporarily and has already implemented a few changes during his short spell.
While the Gers icon may be hopeful of keeping the job permanently when Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises complete their takeover at Ibrox, it remains to be seen what the future holds.
The Light Blues’ 2-0 loss to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership at home, with Jack Butland faltering once again, won’t have left Ferguson in good stead, though, and the Glaswegian outfit may be in for a significant summer.

Butland future to be decided by new manager at Rangers
Butland’s future may be decided by the new permanent manager at Ibrox, Stephen McGinn says.
The ex-St Mirren ace expects the Gers to conclude some serious business in the upcoming transfer window, with the next head coach having a lot on their plate.
McGinn also speculated on the future of James Tavernier but feels the Light Blues will need to be strategic with their transfer in the coming months.
Player | Appearances (2024/25) |
Jack Butland | 42 |
James Tavernier | 45 |
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (9 April), the former midfielder said: “Will Butland still be there? Will Tavernier still be there? It’s definitely the new manager’s prerogative. You can’t get rid of everyone. You can’t sign 15 to 20 new players.
“But there’s going to have to be some serious business and a lot of thinking going on for whoever gets the job.”
49ers need to complete Ibrox takeover soon
Cavenagh and the 49ers’ takeover at Ibrox can’t come quicker, with the Gers’ hierarchy failing to steady the ship over the years.
The prospective new owners will have several decisions to make once they arrive, with Ferguson’s future undoubtedly on their agenda.
Several players’ futures also need to be assessed, and the Light Blues should already be working on a strategy for the upcoming transfer window.
Rangers seem to be in limbo at the moment, with the takeover still not official, and delaying things will only be detrimental at Ibrox.
If Ferguson isn’t the man to take the Bears forward, he should be told so, and the search for a new permanent manager must begin.
While the Glaswegian outfit have endured a rather difficult season, some players have stood out, evidently leading to transfer interest in the coming months.
Vaclav Cerny will leave the Gers at the end of the season, and the US consortium will need to decide whether to trigger the buy option in his deal.
Some influential decisions must arguably be made at the Light Blues before the upcoming campaign to take Celtic off their perch.
