Rangers takeover: Bill Leckie issues 49ers finance update

Bill Leckie delivered a verdict on the Rangers takeover after their recent home defeat against Hibernian on Saturday.

The San Francisco 49ers have reached a verbal agreement to secure a majority stake in the Ibrox outfit.

They expect the deal to be done within weeks rather than months, but it is yet to be rubber-stamped.

Gers board members to feel the pinch of fans walking out

Leckie believes that the fans walking out from the stands mid-game and empty seats will reduce the valuation of the deal the 49ers are looking to do.

He wrote in The Sun on 6 April: “While back at Ibrox, all their fifth home defeat on the spin reminds the board is that with every seat that tips up and every pair of feet stomping early for the exits, another tenner drops off the value of the deal they’re doing with the 49ers crew; tenners that the people whose dosh has propped Rangers up for a long time now simply can’t afford to lose.”

Gers’ fifth consecutive home defeat at Ibrox has sent alarm bells ringing, not just for the team’s performance but for the valuation in the ongoing takeover talks with the San Francisco 49ers Enterprises.

As fans stream toward the exits before the final whistle, the board is painfully aware that each loss chips away at the financial package on the table.

The imagery of dwindling crowds reflects a broader erosion of confidence, and with it, the value drops off the deal’s value with every misstep.

For existing shareholders, many of whom have propped up Rangers through lean years with their hard-earned money, this isn’t just a footballing slump, but a direct hit to their investment.

Rangers have to end the 2024-25 season strongly

Ending the season strongly is critical to halt this slide and restore leverage.

A robust finish, with wins at Ibrox and a competitive showing in the Scottish Premiership and perhaps winning the Europa League, could stabilise the Light Blues’ appeal, showcasing their potential to the 49ers as a viable, fan-supported asset worth a premium.

Beyond pride, it’s about the cold, hard cash as a thriving Rangers side justifies a higher price tag, ensuring shareholders see a fair return rather than a fire-sale discount.

With the takeover looming, every goal, point, and packed stand in the remaining games could dictate whether this deal honors the faithful or leaves them shortchanged.
