Cyriel Dessers ‘to get Barry Ferguson sacked’ at Rangers as pressure mounts

Barry Ferguson might be frustrated with Cyriel Dessers as Rangers lost to Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

Ibrox hosted David Gray’s team on 7 April, with Dylan Levitt and Martin Boyle scoring to take the three points from the Gers.

Dessers was underwhelming for Ferguson’s team and resorted to petty actions as the Nigerian forward was unable to find the back of the net despite multiple opportunities.

The interim boss has heavily relied on the 30-year-old striker since replacing Philippe Clement, but that could prove costly at the end of the season.

Ferguson to feel pressure as Dessers misses chances for Rangers

Ferguson will feel the pressure mounting at the Light Blues if Dessers continues to miss chances, Keith Jackson says.

The Daily Record journalist believes the Nigeria international is the type of centre-forward that would get any manager sacked.

Jackson thinks the 47-year-old head coach’s apparent trust in the former Cremonese striker could potentially be a pivotal mistake.

Speaking on Hotline Live, the journalist said: “[Dessers] is the kind of number nine that would get any manager the sack. I think Ferguson likes him as a guy and a worker and a finisher. I think he displays qualities behind the scenes that he doesn’t maybe display on matchdays. But that, at the end of the day, is going to be a massive pitfall.

“If you’ve got a number nine, he’s got to be able to take chances. The more he misses, the more pressure mounts on the team and Ferguson.”

Hamza Igamane needs to start as number nine v Athletic Bilbao

Hamza Igamane has seen his influence at Ibrox dwindle in recent months after bursting onto the scene earlier this season.

The Morocco international has had to play on the left-hand side of the attack since Dessers’ reintroduction in the starting lineup.

Clement was forced to bring the Nigerian ace back into his plans after he made some essential goal contributions for the Gers.

While Rangers have seen the 30-year-old score some important goals under Ferguson, he has missed several clear-cut chances in the process.

Athletic Club will travel to Ibrox on Thursday (10 April), and the Light Blues will need to do their best to beat the La Liga outfit.

The Europa League is the only chance for the Glaswegian outfit to salvage this season, but things look bleak going into the quarter-finals.

Ernesto Valverde’s team will look at the Bears’ recent record at home and feel they’ve got a good chance of embarrassing the hosts.

The experiment with Igamane on the left wing hasn’t worked, and it’s time to give him an opportunity as the number nine.
