Robin Propper exit: ‘Crazy’ Rangers transfer on cards amid dressing room claim

Robin Propper is possibly on the chopping block at Rangers just a year after arriving from the Netherlands.

Rangers signed Propper from FC Twente for £1.5million last summer, intending to make him their first-choice centre-back, but his performances have often left much to be desired.

The Dutchman has been restricted to just two starts across all competitions since Barry Ferguson was named the Gers’ interim manager in February.

Therefore, there are no guarantees over Propper’s future at Ibrox despite him only arriving in Glasgow last year and likely having multiple years remaining on his contract.

Propper to Feyenoord on cards this summer

Rangers are poised for a big summer of change, with the American consortium involving Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe expected to complete a takeover by the end of the season.

Hiring a permanent replacement for Phillipe Clement will be high on the new owners’ agenda, with Ferguson only tasked with holding the fort for the rest of the campaign.

Nevertheless, Propper may be on his way out of Ibrox, with Feyenoord already mooted as a potential destination for the centre-back.

Assessing Feyenoord’s transfer plans for the summer, Mounir Boualin suggested that the Rangers ace would be a valuable signing for them, albeit still a “crazy” one.

The Dutch journalist is of the view that Propper would add much-needed depth to the Eredivisie outfit’s defence and experience to their dressing room, while not being “too expensive”.

“You are also looking for a defender with experience and who just accepts that he sometimes sits on the bench and sometimes plays”, Boualin said on FC Afkicken’s YouTube channel (2 April).

“Maybe a very crazy suggestion, but I would maybe approach Robin Propper to bring him back from Scotland.

“He is old, has experience, is a leech in a positive sense. I think he can also be important in the dressing room, I don’t think he’s too expensive.”

Rangers must sell Propper

Rangers must not hesitate to sell Propper this summer, as it is evident that he has struggled to settle into life in Scotland.

The 31-year-old is clearly finding football in the Scottish Premiership different to the one he was used to in the Netherlands.

Therefore, a return to the Netherlands this summer would make sense for the centre-back, while Rangers can also try and recoup the money they spent to sign him last year.

They can then invest that money into buying a centre-back that their next permanent manager prefers.
