Rangers live to regret Kieran Dowell transfer call after Birmingham developments

Rangers are being made to rue their decision to allow Kieran Dowell to leave Ibrox during the January transfer window.

Dowell made the move to Birmingham City during the winter transfer window in a search of more game time, and that loan spell is proving to be beneficial for him and the League One side.

The 27-year-old provided an assist for Keshi Anderson as the Blues defeated Bristol Rovers 2-1 in a significant result for the Midlands side on Tuesday.

Birmingham are currently 11 points clear of Wrexham at the top of England’s third tier and boast two games in hand after what has been an unbelievable season.

Rangers to regret their transfer activity

The decision to let Dowell leave is looking like a potential mistake on Rangers’ behalf due to the impact he’s been making south of the border.

Dowell moved in January after the Gers decided he wasn’t needed, but the midfielder has shown his qualities within League One and has been rewarded with game time for that.

Dowell has three goals and as many assists in 16 games for Birmingham, which is the type of form Rangers needed this season in what has been a tough year.

He wasn’t the only Rangers player to join Birmingham on loan this season, either, as Ben Davies made the move during the summer transfer window

Both men have been able to enjoy a lot of success in what is expected to be a promotion season for the Blues, all while Rangers have been struggling.

Rangers made a poor decision

The decision to let Dowell and Davies leave on loan has proven to be a poor one from Rangers’ perspective, as they have plenty to offer.

With the likes of Tom Lawrence, Robin Propper, Clinton Nsiala and Oscar Cortes all struggling, both could have been utilised at Ibrox.

Given all of the managerial change that has happened in 2025 and the fact that there could be someone totally different running things by summer, decisions on their future will likely not be rushed.

Whoever is named the permanent manager may want to see what they’re like in person before letting them leave on loan or for good in the summer.
