Rangers urged to seal shock Celtic player transfer

Kris Boyd has urged his former club Rangers to sign a player from their arch rivals Celtic.

The two Glasgow clubs have a heated rivalry and until recently, did not have away fans in attendance at Old Firm derbies as well.

There are only a handful of players in history to have played for both clubs and the number of players to have signed directly from their rivals are even fewer.

Greg Taylor backed to seal Ibrox switch by Boyd

Boyd has highlighted the weakness in the Gers squad in the left-back position.

Jefte has been the go to left-back this term with Ridvan Yilmaz missing a lot of games through injury.

However, both defenders have come under scrutiny for their inconsistent performances at the back for the Ibrox outfit.

To counter this issue, Boyd has urged his former club to offer a contract to Greg Taylor as he’s set to leave Celtic.

Boyd told the Sun: “If you’re Rangers, would you offer Greg Taylor a contract? Just when you think of Yilmaz, Jefte, I think Greg Taylor has shown for a consistent period of time how consistent he has been. If he’s not going to be at Celtic, he said he wants to play regular. You see him switch sides in Glasgow? It’s a genuine question. I know the rivalry between the two clubs but if Brendan Rodgers has said he’s going to move on for regular football. For me, he’s Scottish, he ticks a box.”

When asked if he thought he was a better player than Yilmaz or Jefte, he said: “He’s shown that for a period of time. There’s no getting away from it. For me, you look, there’s a free contract. He might not sign it, but we know the way the world works now. You could ask the question.”

Rangers not expected to sign Taylor despite his Celtic contract running out

While Taylor might represent an upgrade over Gers’ current left-back options, Jefte and the injury-prone Yilmaz, signing a player who has made over 150 appearances for Celtic would be a bitter pill for the Ibrox faithful to swallow.

The Old Firm rivalry is steeped in history and animosity and bringing in a player so deeply associated with their arch-rivals risks alienating fans and undermining the club’s identity.

Taylor, a Scotland international, has been a consistent performer at Celtic, but his contract running out signals that even Celtic see him as surplus to requirements under Rodgers.

Rangers should focus on improving their recruitment strategy to unearth fresh talent or target players without such a controversial history, rather than resorting to a move that feels like a hand-me-down from their fiercest competitors.

The club’s academy restructure aims to align the B Team with the first team and promote young players, offering a more sustainable path forward.

By investing in scouting and development, the Ibrox outfit can build a squad that reflects their values and ambitions, avoiding the optics of signing a player who’s been a stalwart for the Hoops during their recent dominance.
