Rangers set for £20m Igamane ultimatum as Ange Postecoglou closes in

Rangers know they will have to stand firm if they wish to keep hold of Hamza Igamane beyond the summer.

As all the uncertainty looms over which members of the coaching staff and board will remain at Ibrox into the 2025-26 season, the squad faces the same fate with an overhaul required.

There will be supporter pressure on the anticipated new American regime to invest to be able to compete with Celtic again – but the likes of Igamane could be players they are keen to build around.

Ange Postecoglou wants Igamane from Ibrox

Igamane was brought to Rangers from his native Morocco for just £2.5million last summer, and the Light Blues have received a terrific return on their investment after a slow start.

The forward has slammed home 14 goals and counting – some of them vitally important – and has stepped up in massive encounters this season when others have faltered.

Former Celtic boss Postecoglou won five trophies at Gers’ expense during his time in Glasgow, and is thus hardly in the statue queue across any part of Govan. He returned to his former city with what has been a lacklustre Tottenham Hotspur side back in December, as Igamane scored in a 1-1 Europa League draw at Ibrox.

He was able to cast a close eye on him that night and will have liked what he saw, with Spurs now having joined Everton in the race to bring Igamane to the Premier League this summer.

Despite an opportunity to flip a quick profit for Rangers, they are setting their stall out early regarding the 22-year-old and have reportedly slapped a £20million price tag on his shoulder (TEAMtalk, 26 March).

Rangers could have dilemma on their hands

Many factors will go into whether Rangers decide to offload Igamane this summer.

His age profile is appealing; his potential is sky-high. His confidence never appeared shot from when he was struggling for game time early in the campaign.

Igamane seems an adaptable player, which is why Premier League clubs are circling. The switch to Rangers from boyhood side AS FAR in Morocco was his first professional transfer and departure from his homeland, and he seems to have taken to the move seamlessly.

Under pressure, Igamane delivers. He bailed out Philippe Clement on a number of occasions late in his increasingly doomed reign – perhaps even prolonging the sorry spell – and has shone on the European stage, too. Then there was the Old Firm moment nearly a fortnight ago – enough said.

What happens with Vaclav Cerny’s loan will certainly play a part, as will the future of Cyriel Dessers – who seems to be an Ibrox hero one week and transfer list fodder the next.

Rangers are taking the only natural step they can in arming their defence for the impending raid on Ibrox for their best talent, even if they won’t get £20million for Igamane.

If and when the 49ers Enterprises-supported takeover is complete, stock will be taken of the squad and management – until then, there should be no temptation to sell the Moroccan international.
