Rangers next manager: Chris Jack issues Derek McInnes update

Rangers will be looking to hire a permanent manager once Barry Ferguson’s interim spell finishes at the end of the season.

Thus far, things have gone well for Ferguson as he’s masterminded his side to a dramatic victory over rivals Celtic.

Gers also beat Fenerbahce to make it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

Derek McInnes will always be touted for the Rangers job – Chris Jack

In his Rangers Review piece on 23 March, Chris Jack issued an update on the process to find the next manager.

He admits that it may be too early to consider Ferguson for the permanent job, but a win against Athletic Bilbao may change things.

He also admits that Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes will always be touted for the job at Ibrox.

Derek McInnes’ managerial record

While McInnes has proven adept at managing smaller clubs like Kilmarnock and Aberdeen, his track record lacks the pedigree required for a club of Rangers’ stature, which demands consistent trophy success and European competitiveness.

His only league titles came in Scotland’s second tier, and he famously rejected Rangers in 2017, a decision that still lingers in the minds of fans, potentially undermining his credibility and support.

Moreover, his conservative style of play and limited experience handling the intense pressure and expectations at Ibrox suggest he may struggle to elevate the club.

Steven Gerrard or Rafa Benitez are better alternatives for Gers

In contrast, Steven Gerrard or Rafa Benitez offer Gers a higher ceiling.

Gerrard, a former Rangers manager, delivered the 2021 Scottish Premiership title, ending Celtic’s dominance, proving he can thrive under Ibrox pressure.

His familiarity with the club, coupled with a hunger to redeem his post-Rangers struggles, makes him a compelling option.

Benitez, meanwhile, brings a wealth of elite experience, having won the Champions League with Liverpool and multiple titles across Europe.

His tactical acumen and ability to manage big clubs could stabilise the Ibrox outfit and enhance their European presence.

Both possess the stature to command respect, attract talent and align with the 49ers’ vision for a bold new era.

Unlike McInnes, Gerrard and Benitez have demonstrated they can deliver at the highest levels, making them far superior choices for Rangers’ ambitions.
