Steinsson to advise on new Rangers managers, talks could start in weeks
Rangers supporters will be pondering who the next permanent manager at Ibrox is going to be and Gretar Steinsson will have his say in the proceedings.
After the dismissal of Philippe Clement, Barry Ferguson was chosen as the man to take interim charge until the end of the season.
However, with the 49ers Enterprises looking to complete their takeover at Ibrox, a new permanent manager will need to be identified in time to get a team in shape in Glasgow.

Rangers plan for managerial search
Although he was appointed on the basis of being an interim boss until the end of the campaign, Ferguson has been an unexpected positive addition at Ibrox.
Having overseen five games, Ferguson has overseen three victories including an Old Firm Derby victory and progression in the Europa League.
As a result, there have been conversations about whether Ferguson has put his name into the conversation to take over on a permanent basis.
Simon Jordan, however, has warned that it’s a move that could be too soon for all parties involved.
According to Christopher Jack writing for the Rangers Review (23 March), it may be too early to consider Ferguson as a candidate but if the Gers can beat Athletic Club in the next round of the Europa League, he could well start conversations about the next manager.
Whoever is appointed will have to be approved by Steinsson as the 49ers technical director is reported to be offering guidance in the process of appointing a manager.
Steinsson was at the matches against Fenerbahce and Celtic, so has seen the Light Blues at their best in recent weeks which could certainly encourage backing the team going forward.

49ers have to get Rangers appointment right
As the 49ers prepare to kick off their ownership of Rangers, they will need to ensure they are prepared to start in exactly the way they want to progress.
Ferguson has done an excellent job so far and has certainly raised the morale inside Ibrox which was definitely needed after another harsh season for supporters.
However, the remainder of his career doesn’t offer much hope that on a permanent basis, Ferguson would be able to bring success to Glasgow and one thing they definitely don’t want to do is ruin a reputation.
Club | Win rate |
Clyde | 38.3% |
Kelty Hearts | 65.7% |
Alloa Athletic | 27.3% |
The 49ers can assess the situation between now and the end of the season and getting advice is a good idea to provide different viewpoints.
However, it wouldn’t be too surprising if the current interim man is thanked for his service and replaced by someone who represents bigger ambitions.
