Rangers round-up: Gerrard ‘fondness’ emerges amid Barry Ferguson update
Rangers have a managerial decision to make at the end of the season at Ibrox.
Since the sacking of Philippe Clement, form as been up and down in Govan but a positive atmosphere surrounds Barry Ferguson’s side.
A penalty shootout win against Fenerbahce and an Old Firm victory away at Celtic Park have brought joy back to the Light Blues.
Even with this positivity, there have still been plenty of reports emerging in G51 as Ibrox News rounds up the news stories from 19 March.

SFA ‘to make example’ of Vaclav Cerny after antics v Celtic
It is public knowledge that the Czechia international sprayed water over the home fans at Parkhead after Hamza Igamane’s winning strike.
This has sparked a police probe and an investigation which has been viewed as a huge overreaction by many.
Despite this, Fraser Wilson and Daniel Caw agreed that the SFA need to make an example of the winger for his actions towards the Hoops’ fans.
Speaking on Daily Record’s Hotline LIVE (18 March, 18:27 pm), Wilson said: “That was dangerous at the moment considering it was so late in the game and Rangers had won it in that moment.
“I think the authorities do need to make an example of him, just to nip it in the bud, although it wasn’t overly serious.”
Caw was in agreement with his co-host, as he added: “I agree with Fraser in the sense that they need to make an example of him, because look it’s silly, it’s a bit of water, he’s celebrating but that could have gone out of control and sparked really ugly scenes.”
Graham Spiers stunned by Rangers announcement
Rangers have been charged by UEFA after their Europa League victory against Fenerbahce on Thursday (13 March).
UEFA have charged Rangers for the display of what they describe as a “racist and/or discriminatory banner”, as well as throwing objects from the stands.
In response, Spiers took to X (19 March) after being left blown away by the strong nature of the statement from the Gers.
He wrote: “For the avoidance of doubt, if you do not believe in 2025 that absolutely everyone is welcome to follow Rangers whether at Ibrox or away, then Rangers is not the club for you, and you should disassociate yourself with the club immediately.
“Wow, Rangers, what a statement.”
San Francisco 49ers stance on Ferguson shared
The San Francisco 49ers are already looking at the managerial situation at Ibrox ahead of their potential takeover [TEAMtalk, 19 March].
No decision has been made yet on the future of Ferguson with all possibilities still remaining on the table ahead of the summer.
After securing wins against Fenerbahce and Celtic, his staff do stand a chance of remaining in Govan but an exit is still completely possible.
Date | Opponent | Result | Competition | |
06/03/25 | Fenerbahce | 1-3 | Europa League | (A) |
13/03/25 | Fenerbahce | 0-2 (Pen 3-2) | Europa League | (H) |
16/03/25 | Celtic | 2-3 | Scottish Premiership | (A) |
The Old Firm win and progression in the Europa League is likely to stand the Scot in good stead but doesn’t appear to be good enough to land himself the job permanently just yet.
Steven Gerrard return doubtful despite 49ers ‘fondness’
Gerrard has been consistently linked with a return to Ibrox ever since departing for Aston Villa back in 2021.
After being sacked by Al-Ettifaq, his unemployed spell could coincide well with new ownership at Rangers as Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises continue talks to buy majority shares.
With that being said, this duo may not appoint Gerrard as the next manager in Govan when their takeover is complete, says Mark Guidi.
The Scottish journalist told the Go Radio Football Show (18 March): “I think there is a part of the potential takeover people, if they do get it, that have a fondness for Gerrard.
“I believe that there’s something in that. However, at Leeds, they’ve got Farke. He knows his way about the English championship. He’s not sexy.
“I’m just not quite sure if they want to go down that road. They should be looking at all options. I wouldn’t be comfortable with the owners that are coming in to be all show business. That very rarely works.”
