Barry Ferguson ‘set for new Rangers role’ after American takeover at Ibrox

Barry Ferguson could potentially find himself in a new role at Rangers after the appointment of a new manager at Ibrox.

The Gers icon was appointed interim boss after Patrick Stewart decided to sack Philippe Clement after inconsistent displays this season.

While Ferguson may have strengthened his claim to be the next permanent manager after beating Fenerbahce in the Europa League last-16, it would be surprising if Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises stuck with him if and when they complete their takeover.

The former Scotland international could still remain at Ibrox, though, with a possible role mooted for him in the dugout.

Rangers to make Ferguson assistant of next manager

Ferguson could be the assistant head coach at the Light Blues after a new permanent manager is hired, Fraser Wilson says.

The Daily Record journalist believes the 47-year-old may be better suited to be second in command at Ibrox beyond this season.

Wilson feels the Gers icon has staked his claim to continue his current role, but the prospective new owners could potentially have other ideas.

The journalist wrote in the Daily Record (15 March): “Why not [Ferguson is a genuine contender for Rangers job]? He looks comfortable in the shoes, although you have to remember it’s two wins and two defeats from four games.

“Ferguson ticks a lot of boxes and has done his chances no harm so far. But there’s a long way to go in the season, and he might be better suited as an assistant in the new regime.”

Europa League qualification to strengthen Ferguson claim at Ibrox

Ferguson beat Jose Mourinho’s team in the Europa League to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Jack Butland was the hero at Ibrox after the last-16 tie went to a penalty shootout, with the goalkeeper pulling off two saves.

The interim manager hasn’t hurt his cause after steering the Light Blues into the European competition’s next round, but they will face a tough test against Athletic Bilbao next.

Ferguson has to contend with Celtic in the Scottish Premiership before that, with a trip to Parkhead on the horizon on Sunday (16 March).

The Bears find themselves 16 points behind their Old Firm rivals, and while the league title is out of their reach, the interim manager will want his players to play for pride.

A win against Brendan Rodgers’ team will further the narrative of keeping the former Scotland international in the Ibrox dugout beyond this season.

Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe may have other ideas, though, but there’s no reason why Ferguson can’t be part of them.
