Kris Boyd shares hilarious instant reaction to Rangers’ win over Fenerbahce

Rangers made their fans endure penalties at the Copland Road end of Ibrox on Thursday night, but managed to get yet another job done in Europe.

Barry Ferguson came out on top over Jose Mourinho as Gers won the Europa League last-16 shootout, despite Fenerbahce clawing back a two-goal deficit on the night in Govan.

Gers will face Athletic Club in next month’s quarter-final – but now turn their attention straight back to the Scottish Premiership and the latest instalment of Old Firm drama at Celtic Park.

Boyd aims jibe at Fenerbahce man after skying penalty

Rangers did what they had to do from 12 yards to overcome the threat of Mourinho’s Turkish giants in front of a nerve-wracked Ibrox.

The supporters – and thousands more at home and across the world – were fully aware that elimination from Europe would essentially bring an end to anything remotely competitive this season.

The rest of the campaign would have been a slog, waiting for further takeover developments to take place.

Jack Butland earned plaudits after he made two crucial saves from Dusan Tadic and former Manchester United teammate Fred, sparing Ianis Hagi’s miss before Mert Hakan Yandas spooned his spot-kick high into the stands to seal Rangers’ passage to the last eight.

Former Gers striker Boyd was quick to aim a dig at Yandas after his penalty, while covering the game live from the Sky Sports studio [13 March].

“Oh my days, that nearly hit me on the head,” Boyd shouted.

“It’s over the bar, Rangers are through and they’ll face Athletic Bilbao.

“Jack Butland with that big, huge save before, but that penalty kick there was absolutely terrible – blasted into the stands.”

Rangers prepare for Old Firm v Celtic

Rangers are now preparing to get ready for Old Firm action, and there is far from a lot of time to calm down from the emotions of Thursday night and get into gear for Sunday.

By contrast, Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are out of Europe having been slenderly knocked from the competition by Bayern Munich during the play-off round – subsequently facing no midweek action.

The two bitter Glasgow rivals boast a win apiece from this season’s meetings so far, each club winning 3-0 in their respective home fixture.

Ferguson and his backroom staff have collectively featured in dozens of Old Firm derbies down the years, which can only be useful to utilise for the squad themselves.

Rangers may only have genuine competition to face in Europe this season, but there will never not be plenty at stake when they face Celtic, in whatever circumstances.
