Butland heroic, 3/10 teammate stinks – Rangers player ratings v Fenerbahce
Rangers progressed through to the next round of the Europa League thanks to Jack Butland’s heroics in the penalty shootout.
Having secured a massive 3-1 advantage over Fenerbahce in the reverse fixture, Rangers knew that all they had to do was avoid defeat by more than one goal against Jose Mourinho’s side to cement their place in the next round of the Europa League.
However, a lack of quality in the final third prevented Rangers from posing any real threat, while Fenerbahce were clinical, and a 2-0 lead after 90 minutes saw the tie go to extra time and then penalties, where Butland earned their spot in the quarterfinals.
Ibrox News rates the performance of each Rangers player.

Rangers stumble past Fenerbahce
Jack Butland – 9
Had very little to do in the game and had no chance with either Fenerbahce goal. However, his heroics in the penalty shootout earned the Gers a place in the next round of the Europa League.
Dujon Sterling – 6 (for Yilmaz 55′)
Didnt do an awful lot wrong, but was fairly uneventful throughout the game. His yellow card made it difficult for him to get too tight to the attackers with his withdrawal the right decision from Ferguson.
James Tavernier – 5
Should have done far better with Fenerbahce’s second goal, having blocked Butland from making the save, but failing to block the shot himself.
John Souttar – 6
Souttar has been a crucial player for Rangers this season, but he was far from his best against the Turkish outfit. Was poor on the ball and at times looked shaky at the back.
Leon Balogun – 8
Forced into more defensive work than he would have liked as a result of Jefte, but dealt well with anything that came his way.
Rangers v Fenerbahce | Duels won | Tackles won | Pass accuracy |
Leon Balogun | 7 | 3 | 83% |
Jefte – 3 (for Hagi 84′)
Was perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty after taking a heavy touch on the edge of his own box. Constantly looked like the weak link in the team. His horrendous attempt at a tackle gifted Fenerbahce their equaliser.
Connor Barron – 7 (for Lawrence 95′)
Created plenty of half-chances for Rangers and was tidy on the ball. Similar to Raskin, he struggled to protect the backline awfully much.
Nico Raskin – 6
Tidy on the ball but failed to offer any real defensive security. Was easily beaten in his duels, allowing the visitors to pile more pressure on the Light Blues. Improved as the game went on and afforded more control for Rangers.

Rangers lack killer touch v Fenerbahce
Vaclav Cerny – 7
Fluffed an excellent chance in the opening 15 minutes after a ball in from Jefte, but was threatening throughout. Lacked quality when it came to the final pass but still provided Rangers with their main threat.
Mohamed Diomande – 6 (for Bajrami 67′)
Full of energy in midfield and was always looking to get on the ball. Aside from a few stray passes early on, his quality on the ball shone through more often than not. Unfortunate to have been booked after a foul that appeared to have minimal contact, if any at all. Again, lacked the decisive touch in the final third.
Cyriel Dessers – 4 (for Igamane 67′)
Held the ball up well at times for Rangers, but his all-around play, or lack of it, prevented the Light Blues from posing any real threat. As he has shown countless times, he has much more quality than was on show tonight.
Substitutions
Ridvan Yilmaz – 5 (for Sterling 55′)
Uneventful after his introduction.
Hamza Igamane – 6 (67′ for Dessers)
Immediately posed a threat after coming on and caused plenty of problems for the Fenerbahce defence.
Nedim Bajrami – 6 (for Diomande 67′)
Provided some added urgency going forward.
Ianis Hagi – N/A (for Jefte 84′)
Tom Lawrence N/A – (for Barron 95′)
