Ally McCoist cannot believe what Vaclav Cerny did for Rangers v Fenerbahce

Rangers have progressed to the Europa League quarter-finals with a dramatic penalty shootout win over Fenerbahce.

The Bears headed into their last 16 tie at Ibrox with a 3-1 lead over Fenerbahce thanks to an early strike from Cyriel Dessers, before a brace of goals from Vaclav Cerny.

But matters seemed to take a turn for the worse in Glasgow on Thursday, when Sebastian Szymanski put the Istanbul scored in either half to take the game to extra time and then penalties.

However, Rangers emerged victorious, as two saves from Jack Butland handed his side a huge 3-2 win in the shootout.

Ally McCoist made over 400 appearances for the Light Blues, notching over 250 goals in the process.

But the former striker was left far from impressed by current Rangers forward Vaclav Cerny’s first-half miss against Fenerbahce.

The Czechia international squandered an early opportunity to score, and was unable to direct his effort goalwards from close range.

While co-commentating for TNT Sports at Ibrox [13 March, 20:16], McCoist said: “I can’t believe he doesn’t hit it with his favoured left foot.”

After seeing the replay, McCoist then remarked: “Oh yeah, it’s the wrong foot, he’s got to hit it with his left foot.”

Exciting times could be up ahead for Rangers amid proposed 49ers takeover

While the Gers’ Europa League campaign is set to continue when they face Bilbao in the quarter finals, even more exciting times could be up ahead for the Ibrox side, amid the 49ers’ proposed takeover of the Scottish Premiership outfit.

The Light Blues’ domestic campaign has been bitterly disappointing, as Scottish Premiership leaders and fierce rivals Celtic hold an unassailable 16-point lead over them in the title race.

The Ibrox outfit were also knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Championship side Queen’s Park last month, before a 2-0 loss in the league cost former manager Philippe Clement his job.

Their Europa League campaign has delivered joy, but it has been a largely disappointing season for Rangers, who will hope that better times are on the horizon once the takeover goes through.

Andrew Cavanagh, who is fronting the 49ers’ increasingly imminent move to take control of the Gers, was in attendance during their second leg clash with Fenerbahce, which is cause for serious optimism among the Ibrox faithful.
