Barry Ferguson ‘to be next sporting director’ after Rangers heroics
Barry Ferguson may be the perfect candidate to be the next sporting director at Rangers after putting himself in a decent position at Ibrox.
The Gers icon was appointed the interim boss after Patrick Stewart decided to sack Philippe Clement after inconsistent displays in the Scottish Premiership.
Ferguson won some plaudits after guiding the Light Blues to a 3-1 win against Fenerbahce in the Europa League at the Ulker Stadium on 6 March.
With two crunch fixtures coming up against Jose Mourinho’s team and Celtic in the coming days, a big role could be on offer for the former Scotland international.

Rangers told to keep Ferguson beyond this season
Ferguson has done enough to remain at the Bears beyond this season, Craig Moore says.
The former Gers centre-back believes the interim boss should remain at Ibrox in some capacity, even if he isn’t appointed the permanent manager.
Moore feels Ferguson could be a candidate for the sporting director role at the Glaswegian outfit due to his history in the game.
Scottish Premiership (2024/25) | Points |
1. Celtic | 75 |
2. Rangers | 59 |
3. Hibernian | 43 |
4. Aberdeen | 42 |
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (10 March), the ex-Australian defender said: “I think Ferguson has put himself in a situation where there will be some involvement for him at the football club come the end of the season.
“We know how important it is for him to help contribute. He’s obviously ambitious. The manager’s job would be an amazing story if that was something that happened longer term. If it doesn’t, I think the way he’s already conducted himself.
“We understand how big this week is in terms of the two matches. But if he comes through that, he’s certainly somebody you would want to keep in a role, whatever capacity that may be.
“I don’t see why someone like Ferguson couldn’t be the sporting director. It’s about network and understanding the game. Those things will just fall on Ferguson’s lap.”
Ibrox will want Ferguson to stay for the coming years
Ferguson hasn’t had an easy start to life at the Light Blues, but beating Jose Mourinho’s team at Ibrox on 13 March to qualify for the next round in the Europa League will be a massive achievement.
The Gers icon has had issues with bringing defensive stability to the Glaswegian outfit, but a change in defensive system against Fenerbahce paid off.
Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises are poised to take over the Bears soon, and their arrival could see a sea of change in the hierarchy.
The prospective new owners could do with someone like Ferguson at Ibrox due to his connections with the fans.
In recent years, the Ibrox faithful have been discontent with the mismanagement in the boardroom, especially considering the financial difficulties the Gers find themselves in.
Recruitment hasn’t been the best at the Light Blues, either, and Nils Koppen could arguably use an extra pair of hands to oversee transfer strategy in the coming months.
It would be surprising to see Ferguson remain in charge beyond this season, even if he pulls off a miracle in the Europa League, but a position in the backroom staff seems like a realistic option for him.
