Tavernier decision at Rangers to cause a stir among fanbase – Ferguson

James Tavernier’s future as a Rangers player remains uncertain as he approaches the final year of his existing contract.

Long-serving full-back Tavernier continues to divide opinion among Rangers supporters, with many seeing him as the poster boy of the barren recent years at Ibrox.

The 33-year-old will become a free agent at the end of next season and Rangers have yet to open talks with Tavernier over a new deal.

That could potentially mean Tavernier moving on this summer if Rangers are to bag themselves a transfer fee.

Tavernier set for Rangers testimonial

Tavernier’s Rangers future looked particularly bleak under Philippe Clement earlier in the season, but he has at least won back his place in the side.

It is looking increasingly likely as though his future lies away from Ibrox, however, which player-turned pundit Derek Ferguson believes would be the best decision for everyone.

When Tavernier does eventually move on, he will likely be offered the chance to stage a testimonial at Ibrox given his decade of service to the Light Blues.

However, Ferguson believes even that could cause a stir among the fanbase given the defender’s marmite reputation among some.

“I just don’t see a future for Tavs at Rangers,” Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News. “He’s been a brilliant servant for us.

What will happen is he’ll have a lovely send off in terms of a testimonial – which in itself might cause some debate.

I don’t think he’s ever been captain material, but what you can’t take away from him is the number of games he’s played, the goals he’s scored and assisted – you can’t question that.

We’ve seen others move on, like [Connor] Goldson, and I thought Tav would have also moved on before now. He’s had his time and he’s not going to cut it if we intend to challenge Celtic for the title.”

Tavernier still playing his part for Rangers

For better or worse, Tavernier is still a key cog in this Rangers side – whether at full-back or centre-back.

If Tavernier does indeed move on this summer, a replacement will have to be sought and that will not come cheap.

With 49ers Enterprises soon to be in place at Rangers, it may well be that the club are already looking at possible deals for the summer. Replacing Tavernier may just be one of the top priorities.
