Todd Cantwell sends message to Dessers after what he did in Fenerbahce v Rangers

Todd Cantwell may have burnt bridges with Rangers but that does not mean he has ended his friendships with his former teammates.

Cantwell’s transfer from Rangers to Blackburn last summer was a saga of its own as the midfielder downed his tools to force his way out of Ibrox after falling out of favour under Philippe Clement.

The manner of his exit was in such a way that the 27-year-old burnt bridges with the Premiership heavyweights, with many fans not pleased with the way he behaved.

However, Cantwell has continued to interact with Rangers players on social media and it was no different when Barry Ferguson and Co earned a remarkable 3-1 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 clash on Thursday, 6 March.

Cantwell tips hat to Dessers after goal v Mourinho’s side

Vaclav Cerny grabbed headlines for Rangers after grabbing a brace and giving the side a two-goal lead ahead of the second leg at Ibrox, but it was Cyriel Dessers who opened the scoring for the Light Blues, finding the back of the net just six minutes after kick-off.

Dessers later took to social media to express his delight at playing a part in the Gers’ brilliant win in Istanbul, with Cantwell chiming in to tip his hat to the Nigeria international.

“My striker”, the Englishman wrote (7 March) along with a ‘face with heart eyes’ emoji.

Dessers also invoked a reaction from former Gers forward Kemar Roofe, who commented a fire and clapping emoji under his post.

Rangers on course for Europa League quarter-finals

Not many expected Rangers to earn a win against a Fenerbahce side managed by Mourinho at their own home on Thursday, particularly after their 2-1 loss against Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday, 1 March.

However, Ferguson and Co pulled a rabbit out of the hand by taking an impressive two-goal lead home.

They will look to defend the lead when the two sides lock horns in the second leg of the tie at Ibrox next Thursday (13 March).
