McCoist stunned by Rangers after what Brazil asked him on talkSPORT – ‘Unbelievable’

Ally McCoist has been left in disbelief after Rangers beat Fenerbahce 3-1 in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie on Thursday.

The Gers ensured that they’re in a good position for the second leg at Ibrox next week with a brilliant performance against Jose Mourinho’s men in Istanbul.

While they’ve been brilliant in Europe again this term, performances on home soil have been less than impressive.

And as positive as this latest result is for Rangers, McCoist has still been left confused after what has gone on at G51 over the last few weeks.

McCoist shares verdict on Rangers performance

No matter who has been at the helm this season, Rangers have played above and beyond in Europe.

While Philippe Clement may have been relieved of his duties due to the poor performances his team were putting in, it was their efforts in Europe which kept him at the helm for so long.

And, now that Barry Ferguson is in charge, many expected things to mellow out but that certainly hasn’t been the case.

Speaking live on talkSPORT (7 March, 06:34am), McCoist gave his thoughts on the Gers’ performance.

“I swear it was unbelievable, the boys had two goals disallowed and I still think the first one is onside by the way,” McCoist said.

“It could have been four, I’ve got no idea how the boys are producing it in Europe but make no mistake, it was as good of a performance as I’ve seen in a long, long time.”

He was then asked by Alan Brazil how they get beaten by Queen’s Park and Motherwell to which he replied: “I can’t answer you mate, I don’t know, they’re not even unfortunate, I mean Motherwell deserved the victory.

“It’s not as if it’s a smash and grab, Motherwell deserved the victory, I can’t understand, I don’t know whether they’re not handling the pressure at Ibrox and it’s just the freedom they get [when playing] away.”

Rangers need to go all out at Ibrox next week

Although a two-goal cushion is more than respectable, the tie is far from over.

The Gers are set to take Mourinho’s men on again next week for the second leg of their round of 16 clash and there’s no doubt that Fenerbahce will be out for blood.

Going into the game on 6 March, many expected the clash to be fairly even with both teams having a similar quality of players among their ranks.

However, that was far from the case with Rangers once again managing to better their performance in Europe but, if that sort of form isn’t replicated on 13 March, then the Gers could pay the ultimate price and end up getting knocked out.

So, if they want to prove they have what it takes to go further and prove that they still have what it takes to go up against Celtic, then they’ll need to be at their best once again next Thursday.

Otherwise, it’s likely that Mourinho will make the most out of the tie and get the Turkish Super Lig outfit back on level terms.
