Chris Sutton names manager he’d love to see take charge at Rangers

Rangers’ managerial situation shows no signs of being cleared up despite the 3-1 Europa League win over Fenerbahce.

Barry Ferguson strengthened his chances of securing the role on a permanent basis with the stunning victory in Turkiye on Thursday, 6 March.

However, it remains to be seen whether the 49ers decide to bring in their own man to make a statement once their takeover of the Govan outfit is completed.

Chris Sutton gives Jose Mourinho verdict at Rangers

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has urged the Gers to hire Jose Mourinho as the long-term successor to Philippe Clement after his admission earlier this week that he would like to manage in Scotland.

The 51-year-old believes that the former Chelsea manager could turn the Auchenhowie club’s fortunes around after a dismal season.

In a Daily Record column (7 March), he said: “It was great to see Jose Mourinho teasing the prospect of one day managing in Scotland.

“I’d love to see the Special One in Glasgow – but at Rangers.

“Scottish football could do with Rangers being competitive again – and it would be brilliant to see someone like Jose at the helm.”

Mourinho is an unrealistic target for Rangers

While many Gers supporters would love the idea of Mourinho prancing around the Ibrox touchline, it is nothing more than a pipe dream.

For starters, the amount of money that he would likely demand is beyond what the Light Blues can afford, even with the new investment.

Another factor is Mourinho’s character, while he would bring a no-nonsense leadership and instill an authority that the Gers have lacked since the Steven Gerrard era, he constantly falls out with the board wherever he goes lately and is sacked eventually.

While the likelihood of the Portuguese being appointed at Ibrox is a fantasy, questions remain over Ferguson’s status beyond the end of the season as he has so far been unable to fully banish the demons of Clement’s miserable reign.

The famous victory against Mourinho’s side may increase his chances though and if he can build momentum and drag the Govan club to the final of the competition, the 49ers may struggle to bring in an alternative.

Whatever decision they make, it is vital that it is the correct one, they cannot risk taking a punt of the wrong man as that would only increase the timeline for catching up with Celtic and bringing success back to Ibrox.
