Rangers next manager: ‘Mourinho money’ update after shock reveal

Jose Mourinho is open to the idea of being the next Rangers manager.

The legendary manager surprisingly refused to rule out a stint in the Bears dugout ahead of a Europa League contest on Thursday (6 March) between the Scottish giants and his Fenerbahce side.

The 62-year-old would be a major statement for the 49ers Enterprises group if they appointed him after completing their takeover.

However, the idea of Mourinho managing the Ibrox outfit has been dismissed despite the admission from the former Chelsea boss.

Rangers cannot afford Mourinho

While the prospect of Mourinho roaming the touchline in Govan is a dream scenario, it is unlikely according to Keith Jackson.

Speaking on Daily Record Hotline LIVE (5 March), Scott McDermott raised the idea, saying: “You wouldn’t rule anything out with Mourinho though, would you?”

However, Jackson responded: “He does like a couple of quid though, Scotty, he would hardly be the cheap option.

“I don’t know if they have that much, I don’t know if they have Mourinho money.”

Mourinho to Rangers would reinvigorate the club

If the Gers could agree on a deal with the ex-Tottenham manager, it would be a major signal of the 49ers ambitions at the club.

Philippe Clement was sacked last month and left the energy from the dressing room and supporters in tatters and interim boss Barry Ferguson has struggled to turn around fortunes as his side were defeated 2-1 by Motherwell (1 March) in his first match at Ibrox.

Mourinho and his no-nonsense approach would bring leadership and authority that the Light Blues have lacked on and off the pitch since Steven Gerrard won the league title in the 2020/21 season and would surely turn the dressing room atmosphere around and therefore results on the pitch.

If the Bears are to catch Celtic who they are currently 16 points behind in the Scottish Premiership anytime soon, they need a manager with the kind of influence that Mourinho would bring to the Auchenhowie outfit.

It may be an unlikely option but Gers supporters will be dreaming of a rosier future after the Belgian departed and the Portuguese manager would be a perfect choice to reinvigorate the Gers.

There may be concerns around his recent record, given that he struggled to hold down jobs with things coming to a head within three seasons but in the immediate future, he would be a coup for the Light Blues.
