Rangers news round-up: Huge Rafa Benitez update emerges, Patrick Stewart slammed

Rangers are in the midst of a takeover saga and have appointed a new interim manager in Barry Ferguson.

There are also talks about who the next permanent manager of the club is expected to be and how the club’s UEFA Europa League campaign is expected to unfold.

With plenty being reported about the club, Ibrox News has prepared a news round-up from 5 March.

Celtic fan Martin Compston to ban family member from house after takeover news

Celtic fan Martin Compston is clearly agitated following the recent takeover developments at Rangers.

49ers Enterprises have agreed a deal in principle to complete the takeover of the Ibrox outfit.

Philippe Clement has been sacked and Ferguson is in charge until the end of the season, with plans for a new permanent manager being appointed in the summer.

When asked about Gers live on talkSPORT [5 March, 08:38am], Compston jokingly said: “I’m on the other side of the city, let them deal with that.

“My father-in-law is a 49ers fan so I’ve told him if that goes through, he’s banned from the house.”

Patrick Stewart slammed for ‘astonishing thing’ he did to Philippe Clement before sacking him

Patrick Stewart decided to show Philippe Clement the door, two positions after starting his role as the club CEO.

While it was a move that was celebrated by the majority of the supporters, Gordon Dalziel was baffled at the thought process behind it.

In his view, if Stewart did not care about the European campaign, he should have sacked him long before.

Speaking live on Clyde One Superscoreboard (4 March), he said: “The astonishing thing is that Patrick Stewart said that he didn’t want to upset the European campaign, that’s why they kept the manager after the disastrous result against Queens Park and then days later got beaten by St Mirren and he’s gone.”

Rangers sources issue Rafa Benitez update

While Ferguson is currently in situ at Ibrox, he’s not expected to be in charge for the 2025-26 campaign.

Sources close to the club claim that Rafa Benitez is the 49ers’ preferred candidate to be the next permanent manager.

While they are yet to open talks with the former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager, he is someone who has plenty of admirers and things may materialise.
