Keith Jackson baffled by Rangers story written by Daily Record colleague
Rangers have been hitting the headlines throughout the campaign for various reasons, but the latest rumours have left many in astonishment.
More often than not, Rangers have been in the spotlight as a result of the nightmare of a season they are currently enduring, with the latest defeat to Motherwell piling even more concerns at Ibrox.
Exits from both domestic cup competitions, matched by the 16-point gap from Celtic in the league, has left Rangers praying for success in the Europa League if any silverware is to come this season.
However, with or without that, the Light Blues have some huge decisions to make in the summer, with the next managerial appointment at the top of that list.

Jackson astonished by Rafa Benitez links at Rangers
The need for a swift appointment this summer is growing in importance, with Rafa Benitez tipped to be the next man in the dugout at Ibrox.
Benitez is believed to be a target for the 49ers if they are successful in their takeover of the Scottish Giants, as mentioned in a story written by the Daily Record (4 March).
However, it is that story that has left Jackson baffled, with the journalist questioning the Spaniard’s ability to get Rangers heading back in the right direction.
Jackson said via the news outlet’s X account: “I’m not sure it feels like the right fit. I mean, it could well be that they want to come in, they want to make a statement, announcement of an appointment, and they want to bring in some titan, some guy that, you know, has got a track record of success.
Rafa Benitez | Date left | PPG |
Celta Vigo | March 2024 | 1.09 |
Everton | January 2022 | 1.14 |
DL Pro | January 2021 | 1.16 |
Newcastle | June 2019 | 1.48 |
Real Madrid | January 2016 | 2.24 |
“I think that Rafa Benitez has gone past his peak, and I don’t know if that’s the sort, even with his name, his reputation, his CV, I’m not sure that’s going to be the kind of guy that the Americans would be looking for.
“I think they’ll have very much their own ideas on it. I don’t think they’re going to be beaten into just going, here’s a big name, and here’s loads of money. I just don’t think that’s the way it’s going to work.”

Rangers must get the next appointment right
Given the embarrassment of not only this season, but the fast few, the next appointment is a crucial one for Rangers if they are to get back to competing at the right end of Scottish football.
Ever since the departure of Steven Gerrard, the regression at Ibrox has seen limited success and without the right man in charge, it’s likely to remain that way.
Of course, the 49ers will have a number of key decisions to make, and if they fail to get them right, it could have a pretty drastic effect for the Gers.
