Robin Propper slammed as ‘massive changes’ called for at Rangers

Robin Propper’s maiden season at Rangers hasn’t exactly gone to plan and he has been called out by another disgruntled pundit.

Propper – signed from FC Twente for £2.7million amid much fanfare in the summer – hasn’t been the Connor Goldson successor he was pitched as; the 31-year-old costing Rangers on several occasions.

Rangers, both under the management of Philippe Clement and more recently Barry Ferguson this season, have had to experiement with a number of different centre-back partnerships due to injuries.

However, Propper has been far from convincing as their most regular fixture in central defence, and after another error-strewn display against Motherwell on Saturday, the Dutchman has again been singled out.

Craig Moore lays into Robin Propper ahead of Rangers takeover

At £2.7m, Propper was one of Rangers’ more expensive signings in last summer’s squad overhaul, but such outlays could soon become commonplace at Ibrox again if 49ers Enterprises’ takeover is greenlit.

After a deal was agreed in principle with the 49ers, ex-Gers defender Craig Moore told the GoRadio Football Show (3 March) that signing players more suited to Scottish football than Propper is, is a must.

Moore said: “I think there needs to be massive changes, if I’m honest. In terms of players that are good enough for the standard at Rangers on a regular basis… there’s huge amounts of work to be done.

“Propper gets caught too many times trying to come from an angle and it is easy for a striker to nudge him out the way and hit him off balance.

“It is a small detail, he is not a real physical player, he’s not played in this type of league and had those types of knocks and challenges.”

Robin Propper could be first casualty of new era at Rangers

It’s safe to say sweeping changes are needed from top to bottom once the 49ers take charge at Ibrox as majority owners of Rangers, with their now-agreed takeover deal being to puchase a 51 per cent stake.

The group have made a number of shrewd acquisitions in their four transfer windows so far which have put Leeds United – the other club owned by 49ers Enterprises – on course for a Premier League return.

As a result, Rangers fans can expect a boardroom who will do their deals on the quiet side and possibly bring in some unknown names – albeit names whom could earn the club a hefty profit in the future.

At 31 years old and having experienced a torrid debut season in Scotland, it’s unlikely the 49ers will see Propper as a player with much asset value, and could look to cut their losses as soon as possible.

The likes of Clinton Nsiala and John Souttar could be mainstays at Ibrox for years to come, but with the Light Blues being steered in a new direction, expect Propper to be one of the first players jettisoned.
