Kwame Poku ready to quit Peterborough after Rangers transfer bid news

Rangers will need to continue their squad overhaul if they are to compete next season in both Scotland and Europe.

While it remains unclear who the manager will be at Ibrox from pre-season onwards – Barry Ferguson has signed back at Rangers only until the summer – technical director Nils Koppen and the recruitment staff will still be working overtime.

Kwame Poku, who was on Koppen’s radar before the winter transfer window, is still a sought-after forward having scored 10 goals and claimed eight assists in just 20 appearances for Peterborough United this season so far.

Poku ready to leave Peterborough amid Rangers interest

Rangers were among several clubs to line up a bid for Poku in January according to the Football League Paper (2 March), but the one-cap Ghanaian international has been out since November with a hamstring injury.

Millwall were also among numerous Championship sides offering to keep the 23-year-old in the EFL, but Gers can offer European football.

Poku signed for Peterborough from Colchester United in 2021 and sees his contract expire in the summer, with no intention of extending his stay in East Anglia.

This has unsurprisingly put a host of clubs on red alert, with Rangers able to hold talks now due to competing in a different nation, and Poku having fewer than six months to run on his Posh deal.

Rangers fans will be anticipating Koppen and the board to bring in strong acquisitions this summer, and Poku would certainly fall into that bracket given his form prior to getting injured.

Gers forward options to be assessed

Rangers certainly need to take stock of this season, much of which has been a disappointment under the now-departed Philippe Clement.

The Belgian has only been gone a week, but it feels like so much has taken place in the meantime, with Barry Ferguson already having experienced an away win and an Ibrox defeat, and Rangers takeover talk with the 49ers-backed US consortium continuing.

Gers will reassess the front line, with Vaclav Cerny’s future unclear after his loan finishes, and Cyriel Dessers now hitting form again after being heavily linked with a January exit.

Hamza Igamane and Nedim Bajrami were only signed last summer, Ianis Hagi’s situation remains precarious and Danilo is only recently back on the pitch, while Oscar Cortes remains out.

A player like Poku may be exactly what’s needed at Rangers – and with a tremendous goal contribution record, his young age profile and his availability on a free transfer this year, could be a superb coup if the Light Blues can lure him north of the border.
