Chris Sutton sends another Rangers message after Celtic win

Rangers have been the subject of yet another dig from Chris Sutton after Celtic extended their lead in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

The former Bhoys striker sent a message after the Gers lost to Motherwell 2-1 on 1 March in an embarrassing defeat for interim boss Barry Ferguson.

The Hoops are now 16 points ahead in the title race after they secured a 5-2 victory over St Mirren, who beat the Gers 2-0 in Philippe Clement’s final match in charge before he was sacked.

Chris Sutton hammers home Rangers woes

Sutton could not resist firing another shot at the Light Blues after his former side increased their already hefty advantage at the summit.

Taking to X after the contest (1 March), he said: “Mind the gap. Celtic had to earn that against a spirited St Mirren team. I’m liking Engels more and more every time I see him.

“Celtic’s bench made a huge difference. Maeda maybe edging Kuhn for player of the year now. His goal was superbly taken. Great awareness, great finish”

Rangers won’t catch Celtic anytime soon

The sooner that Gers supporters and the board accept that they will not catch their arch-rivals anytime soon, the better.

Then they can begin what will be a very long process to build a competitive squad and get the backroom in order.

The 49ers takeover of the Govan outfit should provide hope and less shareholder infighting, but it will not solve all of Rangers’ problems, whether that be on the pitch or in the boardroom.

The sacking of Clement was inevitable as results were not good enough, but it is not a silver bullet and form will not just skyrocket now that he has departed.

It will be a long road, probably full of setbacks, but the Light Blues support and those in charge of the club need to put their faith in the right manager to guide the team through the hard times and get to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Whether that man is Ferguson, it is far too early to tell, the comeback against Kilmarnock was a positive sign, but the defeat to Motherwell shows that there is a long way to go for him to prove himself.

The first truly telling sign may be the Europa League round of 16 clashes with Fenerbahçe and whether he can guide his side through a very tough test.
