Ex-Premier League ref loses mind over ‘unbelievable’ Rangers fans pic v Kilmarnock

Rangers fans welcomed Barry Ferguson back to their side as manager with a vocal display at Kilmarnock in the week.

In true unpredictable Rangers fashion of recent times, Ferguson’s inaugural match in charge started off hauntingly before recovering from a two-goal deficit to win 4-2 at Rugby Park (26 February).

The pocket of away supporters in Ayrshire stood loud and proud through every emotion of the game, and will now prepare to laud their former captain’s homecoming at Ibrox against Motherwell on Saturday (1 March).

Rangers supporters lauded after display at Kilmarnock

Rangers always make an impression all over the country and the continent, and Ferguson’s first game was never going to be an exception.

The Killie contest saw the away end at Rugby Park adorned with a blue and white card and tifo display, and the atmosphere was almost single-handedly provided by the travelling support.

The Gers fanatics were treated to a thrilling game – though ‘treated’ was certainly not the accurate term to describe the opening half-hour, when Ferguson’s managerial career was shellshocked instantly.

Former Premier League referee Jeff Winter – a self-confessed joint Middlesbrough and Rangers fan – described the “unbelievable” fact that the display was on the road, when it looked like something out of Ibrox for a titanic clash.

“Unbelievably this display was away from home,” Winter posted on X (27 February).

Govan is expected to be even livelier on Saturday when Motherwell make the trip to Ibrox, which will sing in unison for its former captain of two spells, over 400 games and 15 trophies held aloft.

Gers fans set for exciting March

March is certainly shaping up well for Rangers supporters, with some huge clashes taking place and some potentially memorable days in order.

Motherwell’s visit sees Ferguson return to Ibrox as manager for the first time, before both legs in successive weeks of the Europa League round of 16 tie against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Just three days after the second leg at Ibrox, it’s off to Celtic Park in an attempt to try and secure back-to-back victories over the old enemy.

A trip to Dundee rounds off the month after the international break (29 March), with two more games in April before the Scottish Premiership league split.

There may not be a great deal to fight for domestically, but not only is the European journey still very much alive, there are many memories which can be made to set up the summer well for the Light Blues.
