Barry Ferguson decision ‘on the cards’ at Rangers after 49ers takeover

Rangers may have new owners in the 49ers Enterprises soon, which could potentially affect Barry Ferguson at Ibrox.

The Gers have appointed Ferguson after sacking Philippe Clement on an interim basis until the end of the season.

It has come at a time when the 49ers are in talks to take control at Ibrox, which could see a changing of guard in the Light Blues’ hierarchy.

With Ferguson appointed temporarily, the Bears will have a massive decision to make regarding who their permanent manager will be next summer.

49ers Enterprises to make Rangers manager decision

If and when the 49ers and Paraag Marathe make their way to the Glaswegian outfit, they will want to make a call on who the manager will be, Andy Walker says.

The former Scotland international expects the American consortium to have a say in who will be in the hot seat after making their investment.

Ferguson is accompanied by Billy Dodds, Allan McGregor and Neil McCann in the Ibrox dugout, and it remains to be seen whether they will stay beyond this season.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (25 February), Walker said: “The big thing in the background is the potential takeover.

“And if there is to be one, you would expect anyone who’s prepared to put so much of their own money into the club, they will make their own decision on who they appoint as manager. Whether that’s Ferguson remains to be seen.”

Ferguson doesn’t have much time at Ibrox

Ferguson will be expected to make changes at Rangers after what has been an underwhelming season under Clement.

The ex-Gers midfielder’s first test will be against Derek Mcinnes’ Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday (26 February), and it will be interesting to see how the Light Blues will set up.

As things stand, the Bears are 16 points behind Celtic after their 5-1 win over Aberdeen at home in the Scottish Premiership on Tuesday (25 February).

The Glaswegian outfit realistically have nothing left to play as the league looks out of their hands, and Queen’s Park eliminated them in the Scottish Cup.

Ferguson has the Europa League to contend with, but it would be surprising if the Gers were able to go all the way and lift the title.

The Light Blues will face Fenerbahce in the round of 16 of the European competition, and Jose Mourinho’s team will undoubtedly make it difficult for them.

This season seems like a write-off at Ibrox, and the former midfielder’s appointment on an interim basis seems to be a move made to appease the fans.

Ferguson looks set to remain until the end of the season, but if the 49ers take over, there will undoubtedly be a new manager in the coming months.
