Sean Dyche appointment: Rangers question emerges over finances already
Sean Dyche looks to be an early candidate to take over permanently as the new manager of Rangers, but question marks have emerged already.
A 2-0 defeat against St Mirren proved to be the final nail in Philippe Clement’s coffin and led to his sacking on Sunday (23 February).
The Gers have since appointed Barry Ferguson as interim boss until the end of the season when a new permanent manager will be decided on.

Rangers finances mooted in managerial search
Clement’s departure at Rangers was a long time coming given how poorly his side has performed throughout the season so far.
However, it had been suggested that the Belgian was only retaining his position at Ibrox due to the club not having the money to pay him off.
Scottish Premiership | 2nd (13 points behind Celtic) |
Scottish League Cup | Lost the final on penalties to Celtic |
Scottish Cup | Knocked out in the fifth round, being beaten by Queen’s Park |
Europa League | Round of 16 (ongoing) |
With that in mind, it does seem as though finances could have their part to play in the appointment of a new boss for the Light Blues.
That is unless, of course, the proposed takeover of the Ibrox club by the 49ers Enterprises goes through before the end of the campaign, giving them more resources when it comes to recruiting a new boss.
However, for now, that does have to play its consideration and Calum Crowe discussed the potential impacts in the Scottish Daily Mail (25 February, page 71).
Writing about potential favourites for the job, Crowe mentioned Dyche, saying: “Sacked by Everton last month after a difficult spell on Merseyside which had consistently seen the club fighting against relegation.
“But Dyche did an excellent job across several years at Burnley and certainly has the strength of character and personality to go into a club like Rangers and do well.
“The question would be whether Rangers could really afford him.”

Dyche could take charge at Rangers
Discussions over the financial prospects of different managerial propositions certainly show the difference that a 49ers takeover at Ibrox would make and where it could push the club in the future.
Should the current Gers hierarchy be the ones to make the appointment in the summer then Dyche does feel pretty unachievable.
Not least because they won’t be able to afford him but given the boss worked under financial constraints throughout a lot of his time with Everton, he will no doubt be keen to give that a miss for the time being.
With that being said, if a takeover was to be completed then Dyche could be a strong appointment.
As pointed out by Crowe, as a strong character he would no doubt be able to adapt to the Scottish Premiership fairly well in terms of the levels expected.
However, as a well-organised manager, his high standards could translate well to making the team perform.
There may be some hesitancy from supporters on this appointment especially with a less exciting style of football deployed by Dyche.
However, winning has to be the priority for the Gers going forward and the boss could surely bring the desired upturn in results required at Ibrox.
