Barry Ferguson provides Rangers captaincy update ahead of Kilmarnock
Barry Ferguson has confirmed whether James Tavernier will remain Rangers captain as they face Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership.
The Gers will go up against Derek McInnes’ team at Rugby Park on Wednesday (26 February) as the new interim boss takes charge of his first game.
Ferguson has replaced Philippe Clement at Ibrox as the Light Blues look to bounce back from a rather dull period under the Belgian head coach.
After the 2-0 loss to St Mirren, the fans will want to see the Bears make a change under the former Scottish midfielder.

Tavernier to remain Rangers captain v Kilmarnock
Tavernier will remain the Glaswegian outfit’s captain this season, Ferguson shared.
The interim Gers boss has revealed that he will not give the armband to another player after his appointment in the dugout.
Scottish Premiership table (2024/25) | Points |
1. Celtic | 69 |
2. Rangers | 56 |
9. Kilmarnock | 31 |
10. Motherwell | 31 |
11. Dundee | 27 |
12. St Johnstone | 21 |
Ferguson has complete faith in the 33-year-old and believes the right-back is ready to give it his all until the end of the season.
Speaking to the media via Joshua Barrie on X (25 February), the Scotsman said: “I don’t feel the need to change that. He came in last night and we had a really good chat. I’ve looked him in the eyes, he’s ready to give 100 per cent.”
Ibrox faithful will want positive changes v Kilmarnock
Ferguson returns to Rangers with a massive task on his hands as they look down and out after Clement’s tenure.
The Belgian manager had a poor start to the season, and it would have made sense to sack him earlier, but the boardroom seemed reluctant to do so.
After Patrick Stewart arrived, there was hope among the fanbase that things would get better in terms of upper-level management, but even the new chief executive officer has failed to instil confidence among the supporters.
While the former Monaco boss has been fired, many fans feel it has come a bit too late as the Gers find themselves out of every domestic competition.
Celtic are 13 points ahead of the Light Blues in the Scottish Premiership, and Brendan Rodgers’ team look on course to win the title.
The Ibrox faithful were frustrated with Clement’s inconsistency, and that’s one thing Ferguson needs to change until the end of the season.
McInnes is a decent manager, but Kilmarnock’s recent form has seen them lose four of their last six games, which should encourage the Bears of being able to win at Rugby Park.
With Ferguson, Billy Dodds, Neil McCann and Allan McGregor in the dugout, it will be interesting to see what lies ahead for the Glaswegian outfit.
For now, Kilmarnock will be their biggest test.
