Steven Gerrard contact update emerges at Rangers after Philippe Clement sack

Steven Gerrard has been mentioned over a potential return to Rangers after Philippe Clement was sacked on Sunday.

The Belgian manager was dismissed after the Gers lost to 2-0 St Mirren at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday (22 February).

Patrick Stewart finally pulled the plug on Clement despite calls from the fanbase to sack him right after the Queen’s Park loss in the Scottish Cup.

Gerrard enjoyed a fruitful spell at the Light Blues before leaving for Aston Villa and it’s unsurprising to see the Liverpool icon being linked with a return.

Rangers yet to make direct contact with Gerrard

Gerrard or his camp haven’t yet been approached by the Bears to replace Clement as things stand, Fabrizio Romano says.

The Italian journalist revealed that the Glaswegian outfit hasn’t decided anything yet regarding who will succeed the Belgian manager at Ibrox.

Romano claims that the Gers are assessing their options and anything is possible at this stage.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “At the moment, nothing has been decided, so let’s keep all options open. The club is assessing options to replace Clement, but nothing direct yet with Gerrard or his camp.”

Ibrox to welcome Gerrard with open arms

Rangers have a big decision to make after sacking Clement, as the next manager will be responsible for bringing success back to the Light Blues.

The Ibrox faithful expect big things as the 49ers Enterprises could possibly take over the club and pump in much-needed funds for the team.

While the Belgian head coach started showing progress by handing youngsters more opportunities, the inconsistent results went against him.

Gerrard is someone who secured the league title at Ibrox and helped the Gers get back to competing with Celtic.

Since the Englishman’s departure, the Light Blues have become irrelevant again in the grand scheme of things, with their Old Firm rivals overtaking them.

Gerrard didn’t have the best of times in Saudi Arabia and left after poor results, but the 44-year-old has enough goodwill among the Ibrox faithful to return to the Glaswegian outfit.

Considering Manchester United and Tottenham’s struggles this season, an astute manager could take the Bears all the way in the Europa League.

It will be interesting to see whether the Light Blues will approach the former Liverpool midfielder’s return in the coming days.
